Lon'd m n, June 27. Several Metropolitan jmrna's to-day contain reference to the demonstration at Sydney on the occasion of the r-turn of the New South Wales contingent from Egypt. ■ The Daily Chronicle

eulogised ilit* speech delivered to the troops by Lord Augustus Loft us as an , address worthy of the occasion, and observed with pleasure the well-merited compliment paid by His Excellency to Colonel Richardson and the torce under his command. The Pall Mall Gazette rejoices to see the ' spirit which has throughout animated the contingent, and points, out that the new Cabinet has a splendid opportunity for turning to account in the defence of the Empire the patriotic feeling of the colonies. The writer urged tfiat a well-considered scheme for colonial scheme should at once be submitted hir consideration to the various colonies. The Globe regards the demonstration at Sydney as a gratifying testimony of the loyalty and patriotism of the citizens of Nhvt South Wales', and furthermore points out the presence of an accredited representative from a'l the adjoining colonies as evidence that the force of public opinion is turning in the direction of tedera'ion, Sydney, June 26. Jhe officers of the New South Wales contingent, were entertained lasi evening at a complimentary banquet in their honor, given by Members of the Ministry. Among the guests were Ilia Excellency the Governor (Lord Loftus), Admiral Tryon, the colonial representatives, and many official personages. A number of speeches were made, among others one by Colonel Hanltain, who replied to, the toast of-4-The Visiters,” and tendered the congratulations of New Zealand in a most felicitous manner. The Mayor of Sydney held a luncheon to-day at which he entertained several official visitors from the other colonies who were present at the reception of'he contingent. June 28. One of the members of the contingent, who has been invalided since the departure from Egypt, died yesterday.
