ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— -Will vou kindly allow the insertion of a few lines thanking an anonymous donor for the sum of 2s fid in stamps “ for the poor widow.'’ This being the second donation forwarded to me for the same object, I think it right (to prevent any misapprehension as to whom it may be intended to help) to state that some months ago, Mrs Howarth, of Arowhenua, was lying dangerously ill with asthma, in a house so ill-conditioned as to afford no shelter from the piercing cold and draught. In order to alleviate her sufferings and save her life, I endeavored to interest a few friends on her behalf and raise fun Is to line the house, and roof, and make it otherwise habitable. This was done at once, as the case admitted of no delay, the labour being freely contributed on all sides, Owing to my very severe illness shortly afterwards I was unable to collect more than a moiety of the sum required to defray the expenses of rotfing, &c. To clear the balance, a lecture was given in the Volunteer Hall by the Rev. T. Jasper fils w as the munificent return Ha II, and there will, of course, be the cost of advertising), ibis effort, there? fore, proved fruitless. I shall endeavor, however, to clear off the balance of the debt incurred by a lecture or entertainment, which I trust will be ip f ore liberally patronised than the lecture on » Russia.”—]! am, etc., Thos, A, Hamilton, Incumbent of Temuka, June 26, 1885.
