LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The San Francisco Mail.—The outgoing San Francisco mail closes to-day. Resident Magistrate’s Court. —On Monday the usual fortnightly sitting of the Resident Magistrate will take place at Geraldine at half-past twelre. Entertainment, —ln our advertising columns will be found the programme of the entertainment under the auspices of the Temuka Young Men’s Club on Thursday next.

Gebaldinb Liteeaey Institute. A meeting of the committee of this Institute will be held on Tuesday evening at half-past seven. Ihe business will be to receive the Librarian’s resignation and to consider applications for the office. A full attendance is requested.

Justices oe the Peace, —A Justice of the Peace Amendment Bill, which is to be introduced this session, will provide inter alia that any Justice of the Jeace who shall fail so many times to attend when summoned to sit in Court shall be struck off the Commission of the Peace.

Clearing Sales. —This morning Messrs J. Mundell and Co. publish particulars of the sale of Mr M. E. jfeatley’s property, stock, etc., at Woodbury, on Thursday next, and also of the sale of Mr J. C. Cooke’s household furniture, buggy, horse, etc., at Bilton on Friday next.

Wesleyan Chuech, Temuka.— On Sunday next (to-morrow) a fourteen days’ mission will be commenced in the Temuka Wesleyan Church. The meetings will bo conducted by the Rev. Mr Nicholl, Wallis and Thomas. It may be mentioned that the hymns will be selected fron Sankeys’ hymn book, and that a collection will be made each Wednesday evening to defray expenses.

The Eangioea School.— The Commissioners appointed bv the North Canterbury Board of Education to enquire into certain charges against the Head Master of the Esngiora School (Mr Goodeve) gave in their report on Thursday last. They found that several charges against the master were substantiated, and he will be asked to resign at once. The chief charge against the master was intemperance.

Temuka Public School.— This school was closed yesterday for the winter vacation. It will be reopened in a fortnight’s time.

Temuka Mechanics’ Institute.—Out of eleven candidates for the position of Librarian to the above Institute Mr It. Guy was selected last night. Masonic. —The installation of officers of Winchester Lodge, No. 1737, E.O. will take place on Wednesday evening next in the Lodge room. Visiting brethren are invited to attend.

Financial Statement. —The Hon, the Colonial Treasurer delivered his Financial Statement last evening, and we publish a portion of it elsewhere. We have to thank the local telegraph authorities for the prompt manner in which the Statement was handed to us.

Geraldine District School. —This school closed yesterday for the usual midwinter holidays, and will reopen in a fortnight’s time. The school is closed earlier this year on account of the pupil teachers’ examination taking place next week in Timaru. Three pupil teachers are going for examination from the Geraldine School this year.

Temuka Linseed Company. —The Secretary to the Temuka Linseed Company notifies that shareholders whose arrears exceed one call must pay the same within fourteen days or the same will be placed in the bauds of the Company’s solicitor for collection. —’Farmers and others in this district who intend to grow linseed this season are requested to inform the Secretary of the Linked Company of the acreage they purpose sowing, as early as possible. St. Saviour's,'Temuka. —At a meeting of the parishioners of; this Church on Monday night, Mr G. Boßon was elected parishioners’ churchwarden m the room of Mr B. D. O’Halloran, who is leaving the district. Mr Bolton wAS formerly minister’s churchwarden, but resigned that position with the permission of the Incumbent. At a Vestry meeting the same evening it was decided to present Mr O’Halloran with a handsome Church Service as a slight token of the recognition of his work for the good of the Church during the past two years.

Severely Punished. —At the R.M. Court, Timaru, on Thursday, Frederick Lucas was charged with unlawfully escaping from penal servitude on Wednesday. Prisoner pleaded guilty, but said he did not know -what tempted him to escape. Mr Beswick said it was only right that prisoner should commence early to know that he must keep within the rules of the gaol, and as he bad tried to get away from the punishment indicted on him he would have to suffer the consequences of his action. He would be sentenced to 30 davs in irons, close confinement, and 14 days on bread and water. Sporting. —ln response to the kind invitation of the Hon. L, Walker, a number of gentlemen left Geraldine on Wednesday afternoon for a day’s hare shooting on the Four Peaks estate. The Company consisted of Messrs J, Cunningham, D. Denoon, W. E. Lawson, D. Mackenzie, J. Farrell, F. Fish, D. Andrews, W. Young, and W. Dale. They enjoyed a capital day’s sport, bagging over 110 hares. On leaving for home in the evening three hearty cheers were given for Mr Walker, and also for his two representatives, Messrs Polhilland Fraser, who accompanied the party during the day. Hilton. —At a meeting of the Hilton School Committee on Wednesday last, it was decided to accept Mr Cooke’s (the head teacher) resignation from the 25th inst., and it was decided to give him a testimonial and pay him for some fruit trees ho had planted. Tenders for firewood at 25s per cord, and trimming fences, 245, were accepted.—At a meeting of the Library Committee the same evening, Mr Cooke gave in bis resignation as Secretary and Librarian of the Institute, which was accepted wiib great regret, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Cooke for his services. Mr J. Eelland, jun., was elected to fill the vacancy. It was decided to obtain during next month books to the value of £lO.

Masonic. —At the annual meeting of the Aroha Mark Masonic Lodge, Winchester, the following officers were installed Bro. James Findlay, W.M. ; Bro. S. Gould, S. ; Bro. fl. Smith. J.W. 5 Bro. B. S. After the ceremony was OTer, the brethren sat down to an excellent spread provided by Host Bro. L. Tombs. The good things having been discussed, and all the loyal and patriotic toasts responded to, a most enjoyable evening came to a conclusion with a vote of thanks to the installing officer and retiring officers. The Waterloo Cup, The following applications for nominations in the Waterloo Cup, to be run at Jflurapton Park on July Btb, 9tb, and 10th, under the proposed conditions issued in March last, have been received up to this date; —Courtenay Bros. As the stake did not fill by the appointed time, the Directors have determined to run it under conditions similar to those of last year, viz., that subscribers shall bo permitted to guard two doge if entered as their bona fide property. The nominations will close at the Empire Hotel on July Ist, at 9 p.m. N.Z. Volunteers. — Owing to the large increase in number of Volunteer corps in Canterbury, it has been determined to divide the district. Lieut.-Col. Lean retains the Northern portion, and LieutColonel Bailey, late of H.M, Devon Regiment, taking command of the Southern. It is understood that the new South Canterbury district will include the Timaru Artillery (C Battery), Tiinarn Naval Artillery, Timaru Rifles, Ashburton Guards, Temnka Rifles, Geraldine Rifles and Waimate Rifles. Consequent on the alteration the following promotions have been made:— Captain Tosswill to be Major; Captain Hamersley (C Battery) to be Major; Lieutenant Francis (Christchurch City Guards) to be adjutant with the rank of Captain. Appointments have been made in connection with the School of Instruction for the examination of officers of Militia and Volunteers as under;—Canterbury District —The Hon. Young Men’s Club, Geraldine.— An adjourned meeting of the members of the Young Men’s Club was held in the Club room on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance, and Mr W. Coltman (President) was in the chair. After a short discussion, it was unanimously resolved to keep the Club open. One of the members agreed to act as caretaker for the time being. The election of » Secretary was held over. This being all the business, the meeting terminated.

Governmemt Life Assurance Association. A meeting of policy-holders in this Association was held in Temuka last evening in the Wallingford Hotel, to consider the proposal to establish local boards. About 16 were present. Mr Aspinall was voted to the chair. After a short discussion the following resolution was passed:—“That this meeting having carefully considered the arguments for and against the establishment of local boards desire to express the opinion that the establishment of such is not desirable, and would prove disadvantageous to the Association ; further that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Geo. Fisher, Esq., Wellington, by the Chairman. Barker, Kynnersley, Temuka, invites tenders for the lease of 630 acres of land within easy distance of the Temuka Dairy Factory. The land is in blocks of 20 to 130 acres in extent. Tenders close to-day.
