POLITICAL.

It is said that amendments will be moved to the Legislative Council Bill, either limiting the appointments to a maximum number in one year or fixing a limit to the total number of Councillors. Both /fill be resisted by the Government.

Opinions (says the Wellington correspondent of the Press) vary widely as to tlie prospects of the political situation. Ministerialists say they are strong enough to resist any attack. The Opposition say their plan is not to attack unless on some specifl point, as they deem it better to leave the Government unmolested for a while, but that their fear is lest the Cabinet should tumble to pieces before Ihey (the Opposition) are ready to profit by it. The plain truth is that nobodjr knows anything ahout the matter as yet, and the situntion is " without form and voH."

Wheu Mr Macandrew moves his resolu. tion that the House shall meet at 10 30 a.m., Major Steward will move as an addendum —" That in conjunction with the motion of which notice has been given by the hon. member for Port Chalmers, the report of the Standing Orders Committne, presented on 29th October, 1884, be taken into consideration." The resolution, inter alia, is as follows :—" The Committee recommend that Standing (Jider No. 38 should be amended, so that the House shall meet for business at. iO a, m , and that the Speaker shall leave the chair from 1 till 2, and that the House shall adjourn for the day not later than 6.30

p.m." There is not the remotent anticipation of these proposals being agreed to by the House, as it would utterly disarrange ail order of businass.
