WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

The Perth Inquirer of Miy 13 says that when Sir Frederick Broome " returns to hi* seat of Government next month, he will find himse'f about the most popular Proconsul that has ever represented her M'ijesty in this portion of her Empire. The reason of this is not far to seek. During his absence Sir Frederick Broome has, by every means in his power, striven to prove that he is a true friend of Western Australia. Not only has his Excellency smoothed the way towards making the floating of our new loan a financial success, but he has also made the name of Western Australia familiar to millions of persons to whom the words were previously utterly destitute o? meaning. He has advertised the colony, its natural beauties, its vast undeveloped resources, and its illimitable potentialities of wealth in the very best manner possible. In this good work he has been ably assisted by his gifted wife, who, by means of her literary genius, has removed the clouds of ignorance, contempt, and indifference which have so long shrouded our vast province from the eyes of the outside world. When in the future the history of Western Australia comes to be written, the account of Sir Frederick Broome's administration will form one of its brightest pages ; for it will then be seen that it was owing to Sir Frederick's exertions that the colony began to advance in national prosperity with giant strides."
