The Temuka Leader SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 1885, LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Irish Volunteer Corps. —A meeting of those Irishmen interested in the proposed Irish Yolunteer Corps takes place in the Star Hotel, Tennikii, this evening.

Welcome Retreat Lodge, Geraldine. — The open meeting of the above Lodge, postponed from last Monday evening on account of bud weather, will bo held on Monday evening next in the Temperance Hall. All are invited to the meeting, the admission being sixpence. The Oddeellows’ Hall, GtEraldinb. — The Oddfellows have decided to enlarge their hall, and we understand that tenders will be called for the work at once. The ante-rooms will be shifted back and the hall lengthened by 20 feet. This should afford ample accommodation for tho gatherings, entertainments, public meotings, &c., that are held in it during the year. Geraldine Literary Institute. —Owing to leaving tho district, Mrs I’. Addis has been compelled to resign the position of Liberian to the Institute. Mrs Addis has been connected with it for severe, years, and has by the faithful discharge of her duties given the Committee and subscribers to the Institute every satisfaction. Applications are now invited for the position. Parliament.—Parliament was opened by the Governor in person on Thursday last. The attendance of Members was very small, not more than one-third being present. Af er the delivery of the Speech (which will be found elsewhere) several Bills were introduced. No petitions were presented. Conaiderable surprise was elicited by Mr Pearson announcing that he would move the Address in Reply on the following day, as this is generally deferred for several days.

Geealbine Rifles.—We would remind members of tho above Corps that the inspection parade will be held on Tuesday evening, men to fall in at 7.15 sharp. As the Oddfellows’ Hall is engaged on Tuesday evening, the parade will most probably be held in Mr Mundell’s Horse Repository. Final notice of this will be given this and Monday evenings. It is almost needless to remind members that all must be present, unlessleave of absence is obtained from the commanding officer. No absence will be excused unless on production of a medical certificate of illness. The Chusgh at Peel Forest.—On Sunday, 31st May, the Church recently erected at Peel Forest was opened by the Rev. James Preston, Incumbent of the District. The building formerly used as a Church at Peel Forest, was blown down, and hopelessly wrecked. The present Church has been built by Messrs Nelson and Coates, of Ashburton, under the supervision of the Architect, Mr Marley, of Christchurch, and is calculated to hold about 70 persons. It is substantially built of timber, with a concrete foundation. There is also a bell turret and a bell, the gift of Mr W. Barker. The Church was crowded at the opening, and the choir of tho village sustained their part well and were heartily joined by the congregation. There will for the future be services in the Church every Sunday, morning and evening.

Young Men’s Club, Geraldine. A meeting was hold on Wednesday evening of the members of the above Club to consider the advisability or otherwise of closing the Club. Mr Coltman (President) was in the chair, and about fourteen members were present. The balance-sheet laid before the meeting showed the receipts from all sources to have been £36 14s 6d, and expenditure £45 7s Id, leaving a deficit of £8 12s 7d. £l3 10s had been paid to the caretafce-, and in future they could do without a caretaker by some of the young men taking it in turns to clean and light up the rooms. Subscriptions from 20 members would suffice to keep the club going, as the rent was only 7s per week. After some further discussion, it was decided to adjourn the meeting till next Thursday evening, and in the meantime to try and ascertain the amount of support to be obtained from the public towards the support of the Club.

National Bank, The question of a National Bank has at length reached a position which we did not expect it to reach eo soon. According to the Wellington correspondent of the Lyttelton Times, corresponpondence referring to it has been laid before Parliament. The correspondence consists of letters which havepassed between the Hon. the Premier and the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, which asked the Government to appoint a Parliamentary Committee to investigate the whole subject of the currency and the practice of Banking. The Hon the Premier has promised to lay the whole subject before Parliament and he bus done so. If now there had been in the House a few members who felt an enthusiastic interest in this subject, there is no doubt but that it could be removed a step further. But it will come to anything until the people take it up. For instance, there is not. in New Zealand a constituency which has had the matter so fully and So frequently put before it as this one, and yet there was not one man in the district to ask Mr Kolleston a question on the subject when he spoke here recently. So long as the public are so apathetic as this it is hopeless to expect that anything will be done. However, we have done our share of the work : let others take it up now.

The Tbmuka Linseed, Oil, Cake, and Fibre Company, Limited,—A meeting of the Directors of this Company was held on Thursday afternoon, Mr John Talbot in the chair. An offer for the seed threshed by the Company (with the exception of that reserved for sowing) was accepted. The Manager, Mr Monahan, received instructions to prepare an exhibit for the Wellington Exhibition, and samples of fibre for sending Home to several firms to ascertain the price they would give. Correspondence was read allowing that Urn machinery had not been shipped by the Cingalese, and would probably not arrive before two months. The Manager slated that by placing tho scutching machinery in a leanto, lie was of opinion the present building would hold the spinning machinery. It was suggested the Company should purchase a weighbridge, but it was shewn that the coat would lie too great. As the outstanding calls were not being paid, it was decided to advertise that all calls unpaid after a certain date would he sued for, and the Secretary was inslructecl to issue the summonses immediately upon the expiration of the lime allowed. Also, to advertise asking those farmers who intend sowing to notify the Secretary of the proposed acreage. Several applications for situations having been received it was decided to leave the engagement of men entirely in tho hands of the Manager. After some further routine business tho meeting terminated.

The Merry Makers.— The Merry Makers appear in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, to-night and Monday night.
