TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Temuka Road Board was held last Tuesday. Present Messrs Talhot (Chairman), Quinn, (Smith, Hayhurst, and Brown. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. deputation. Mr Twotney said he had been requested to make an application to the Board for one of the Government cottages to be let to Mrs Upnchard as she was in poor circumstances. It was arranged that the Rev. Mr Hamilton shou’d have come to make the request, but he was not about that morning, and he (Mr Twomey) was asked to bring the matter before the Board in the absence of Mr Hff»siHon. He expected that Mr Hamilton would come in the course of the day. Would the Board receive him if he came after the usual time for deputations ? The Chairman : Certainly, any time up to 1 o’clock. ( Mr Twomey said in that case it might be as well to wait. The Chairman said he knew Mr Twomey represented the general feeling of the public. He had been spoken to on the subject also. After some conversation, it was decided to postpone the question to see whether Mr Hamilton came.

At a subsequent stage Mr Hamilton came, anrl made a similar application. The Chairman said he quite sympathised with the request, but the cottages did not belong to the Board, They were immigrant cottages, and the Board had only charge of them. Mr Job Brown suggested to let Mrs U prichard have one of them at 2s per week.

Mr Quinn : Two shillings ! One shilling is more like it if we give it at all. After some further conversation, Mr Quinn moved, Mr Brown seconded, and it was carried—“ That one of the cottages be let to Mrs Uprichard at sixpence per week.”

Mr Biasett waited on the Board to see whether a man can tamper with culverts on the road. A culvert had been stopped by Mr Hawke for the last seven weeks, and was throwing the water on to his land.—The Overseer was instructed to inspect the place. Mr Malarkey waited on the Board In reference to some damage done to land,—The Board instructed him to supply a statement of the amount ho had lost.

Mr Malarkey then withdrew. Messrs Demuth, Connolly and Hopkinsou waited on the Board with regard to the road to George Town stopped by the Maoris. The Chairman explained the stops already taken by the Board in the matter. They had written to the Native Department, and were warned not to pay any money without getting the signatures of the seventy Maoris for whom it had been reserved, and they were scattered all over New Zealand. The Commissioner of Crown Lands had written to say the land had already been paid for, and the Rev. Mr Stack that it’ had not. The only thing they could do was to arrange with the Maoris until the question was settled. Mr D nuutb said be wanted a ro&d to the rifle range, but on referring to the map it was tound ho road had been laid, out there. The deputation then withdrew. Mr Smith said he had been requested by Mr Deßenzy to bring under the notice of the Board the fact that the contractor for the road had thrown stones into his gorse fences. The Overseer said they were thrown in against the orders of the contractor, but still it was a common practice that ought to he stopped. Mr Quinn said the contractor’s cheque ought to be held until Mr Deßenzy was satisfied. It was resolved—“ That contractors in future be fined for throwing stones into fences.” ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £lO3 7s 4d were passed for payment. COIUIESPONUENCE. From Mr John Hay, asking the flow of water through his land to be stopped. —The Overseer said Mr Hay’s statement was correct, and suggested to clear out the ditch —lt was decided to call for tenders for the work of clearing out the ditch. From the Hon, W. Rolleston, stating that the Canal Reserve Road was m-

passable, and asking that something might be done to it.—The Overseer was instructed to inspect the place, and if he could repair it at a small expenditure to Lave the work done. From Mrs Honora Daily, asking to be relieved of paying rates.—lt wag decided to grant the request. From the Overseer to the Geraldine Road Board, asking the date on which the Temuka district severed from Geraldine.—The information had boea supplied. From the Temuka Town Board, re shingling boundary roids.—Resolved —“ That a reply be forwarded that the Temuka Road Board are under the impression that the streets in que-tion are cot boundary ores.” From the Geraldine Il< ad Board suggesting that as soon as their Overseer had ascertained the amount of money expended on the boundary road by the Geraldine Road Board, a meeting between the two Boards should take place with a view of arriving at an equitable and more definite arrangement. From Messrs Kemptborne, Prosser, and Co., quoting price of strychnine.— The Board decided to procure lOOoas, for the destructions of small birds. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted . Contract No. 32—Forming footpath and shingling Sludholme street: W Lewis, £9 15s. Contract No. 33—Cleaning drain, Main South Road : M. Flaherty, Js 5d per chain. POUNDKEEPEB. Mr John Lawson was reappointed poundkeepeT at the same rental as hitherto paid by him, viz,, £3O per year. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The Overseer’s report having been read, it was decided to shingle about 5 chains of Road between Bad ham’s and Cooper’s Creek ; also that Mr Young be asked to pay half cost of erecting a new fence where the Waihi Creek comes close to the Main South Read ; that the Overseer take vigorous measures to compel property-owners to comply with notices re gorse. The Board then adjourned.
