ARRIVAL OF THE FRISCO MAIL.
The San Francisco Mail Steamer arrived at Auckland on Monday. She brings the following intelligence; San Francisco, May . The naval and military works still continue’ in England. Both branches are fully supplied with stores. To a question why Lurasden was recalled from Afghanistan while Komaroff was retained there by the Russian Government, Mr Gladstone replied that there was no relation between the cases of the officers. Sir Peter was employed in a purely civil capacity, while Komaroff was in command of the Russian forces. Despatches of the sth instant say that the English people are enraged at Gladstone, while Lord Randolph Churchill is the hero of the hour. There is no appearance in St. Petersburg of any abatement in the warlike preparations, and the mobilisation of rifle battalions in Finland continues. The Sc. Petersburg Official Messenger states that in consequence of the divergence of the views between the Cabinets of Russia and England on the interpretation ot the March agreement, it has been decided io submit the question to an arbitrator. In the meantime both countries have agreed to resume the frontier negotiations, but on a different basis, viz., that the principal points of the frontier be fixed by a previous understanding between the two Cabinets, the demarcation of the frontier on the spot and the placing of indicating posts being reserved for the Commissions which both Powers will send in order to facilitate the work of delimitation. The outposts of both sides will not be withdrawn from their present positions until the arrival of the joint Commission, when, as fast as the direction ef the frontier line is fixed, .the frontier points will be occupied by the troops of both parties concerned. It will then be the duty of each to maintain order and security in its respective places. A special despatch from Calcutta to The Times says that the news of the peace arrangement has created dismay in India, and the vacillation of the Ministry was ruinous to Brittish prestige before Colonel Sir Patrick Stewart bad arrived at Herat. Despatches of April 2fth from the Soudan say that’ the hostile Arabs are again becoming troublesome to the British. Scouting parties of these belligerents make constant attempts to destroy 1
the section of the Sonakim-Berber railway already constructed, and cut the telegraph lines wherever they can. Every nightEl Mahdi’s men fire upon and into the British pasts. The garrison of Senaar defeated the forces of the Mahdi, which made an attack on that place on April 27th, Despatches from Sonakim of May 4th say El Maclhi’s men are becoming more daring every day.
