Charles Noy, an old man, dropped dead at Qtalin hit (Auckland) from heaii disease on Friday. He had been drinking. The Auckland (Jiiy North Licensing Committee Ime notified no less tliau six hotels of objections to renew I heir licenses on the grounds of Sunday trading, insufficient accommodation and not being required in the neighborhood. The Manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company has received a cable message from London to the effect that the meat by the ?.s. At its meeting on Friday, the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce resolved to enlist the other Chambers of this and the Australian colonies in a combined effort to reduce the charges on cable messages sent by the New Zealand line. Thu Chamber also resolved to send to the South Sea Islands a suitable person to enquire, in the interests of this part of New Zealand, into all matters of commercial interest there, the cost (o to borne by subscriptions raised in Canterbury. The Women’s Gospel Temperance Mission organised in Christchurch by Mrs Leavit', have resolved to take vigorous action. The city and suburbs have been divided into districts, for the purpose of a house to house canvass by the ladies, ami public meetings are to be held monthly,: Mr Riley, an undertaker of Bulls, (Wellington), died on Saturday morning through inhaling the effluvia from the corpse of a Parawanui chief, Kavvana Hunia, while placing it in the coffin last Tuesday. ALa Crosse Club lias been formed in Dunedin with a sirong membersh'p. Thu LaCrosses arrived from Melbourne on Saturday, and on Saturday next the opening maich will be played. This is the only Club of the kind in the Middle Island.
