London, May 28
The Directors of the Bank of England to-day resolved to reduce the Bank rate from. to 2 percent. Tenders aie invited on behalf of the New Zealand Government for a loan of £1,500,000 at 4 per cent. The minimum fixed on is 97£. It has transpired that the Conference which was held on Wednesday between the Colonial Agents-General and the Senior Naval Lord of the Admiralty was merely to ascertain how many tor pedoes would be required for the defence* scheme of each colony. Captain Brennan, of Victoria, the inventor of (he torpedo bearing his name, has received a large amount from the English Government for his patent rights. The New Zealand loan is already quoted at a premium of per cent. It is expected that the average will be about £99,
The several Agents-General and Sir Charles Tupper, High Commissioner for Canada, are urging upon the Government the exemption of colonial securilies from the stamp duties. The Colonial Institute are also urging upon the Government the necesaity of granting more favorable concessions is regard to the importation of colonial wines.
The race for the Manchester Cup was run to-day, and resulted as follows : Mr R, Jardine’s ch h Romeo, 1 ; Exema, 2 ; Crora-a-boo, 3.

Another picture by Mr J. E. Millais, R.A., “ The Ruling Passion,” exhibited at the Royal Academy, has been purchased for the Sydney Art Gallery. May 80.
A part of the Ruapehu’s cargo of frozen meat is soft and spotted, and is selling from 3£d to 5d per lb. The meat by the '] anui is selling at s£d. The shipment of grapes by the steamers Orient and Pekin are in good condition, and the pears by the same vessels are excellent.
The various Agents-General and a number of merchants have waited upon the Government and urged them to modify (he existing duties on colonial
wines. General Graham in his despatches comments the general order maintained by the New South Wales contingent, and he slates that by their action a bright example has been shown of the latest military strength of the Empire, and that the soldierly spirit shown by them was a theme of universal admiration.
The Agents General for the Cape of Good Hope and the Australian colonies, have presented a joint petition to Mr Childers, Chancellor of the Exchequer, asking for a reduction in the wine duties, in spite of the fact that a rupture has occurred in the negotiations for a commercial treaty with the Spanish Government,
The project which was set on fool to establish a hospital at Fort Said, as a memorial to (he late General Gordon, has been abandoned. The Committee which have charge of the subscriptions are now considering to what use the funds shall be put. The weather is now much warmer, and harvest has been delayed a fortnight. Berlin, May 31. The latest bulletin in regard to the health of the Emperor William states that he is decidedly better. Capetown, May 29. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s R.M.S. Aorangi left this morning for New Zealand ports. Teneripfb, May 29. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. Rimutaka sailed this morning for New Zealand via the Cape of Good Hope. '
AUSTRALIAN CABLE.
Sydney, May 29. The sculling match, for £IOO a-side, between N. Matterson and Messenger took place to-day on the Parramatta river, and resulted in the defeat of Messenger, Matterson, who led from start to finish, winning easily.
May 30. .The b.B. Tarawera left Sydney on the evening of the 28th. Brisbane, May 30. It is stated that the Queensland Government are in possession of information, from authentic sources, to the effect that Milne Bay, New Guinea, has been forcibly seized by a German vessel. Melbourne, May 30.
A large and enthusiastic meeting held in the Town Hall last night to initiate a movement for the erecdon of a statue to the late General Gordon. Resolutions were unanimously adopted approving of the project, and a large number of subscripiions were promi-ed among those present, who numbered fully 4000. 7
The prisoners, Alexander Ross and Milne Smith, who were recently arrested on a charge of being connected in an extensire robbery from the London Chartered Bank at Horsham in March, 1884, were examined yesterday, and were remanded for further evidence.
