AUCTIONEER’S REPORT. GERALDINE, Messrs J. Mundel'l and Co, report sales for the week ending Saturday, 30th May, 1885 : During the week three clearing sales have been held by them. On Tuesday, at the nursery of Messrs Coombs and Chapman; they conducted a sale of fruij; and forest trees. Although the attendance was not large, all present were evidently purchasers, and when the sale was finished the demand for trees was far from being exhausted. On Thursday, at the Geraldine Yards, on account of the trustees in the estate of John Kennedy (deceased), they held a clearing sale of stock and properties. There was a good attendance, and, although the stock generally was in bad Selling condition, every lot was well competed for, and realised full market value. Prices realised were ;—Sheep—Crossbred ewes, in lamb, 9s; crossbred lambs, 6s 9d ; merino ewes, in lamb, 4s 6d ; cull merino rams, 4s 3d. Cattle—Fat cows, £5 5s ; 2-year-old heifers, £3 ; yearlings, £1 6s; calves, 13s. Horses—Draughts, from £7 to £l3; hackney and ligh* harness horses at prices ranging from £5 12s 6d to £ll. Properties—£-acre section in Geraldine township, £29 ; £-acre section in Hilton township, with blacksmith’s shop, £4O; and other effects at satisfactory rates. On Friday, at Oakley Farm, Orari, on account of James Gregg, Esq., they held a clearing sale of stock, implements, grain, land, etc. There wad the largest attendance of buyers from North and South Canterbury that has attended a sale in this district for several years. The stock and plant were good of their several kinds, and Mr Gregg is to be complimented for the capital condition in which his stock was placed before the public. The prices realised fully substantiate their remarks, which were as follows : —Sheep —l9 E.L. ewes, 3| guineas ; 6 E.L. ewe hoggets, 5 guineas ; 10 E.L. ram hoggets, 3£ guineas ; full-mouthed E.L. rams, 4£ guineas ; 110 crossbred ewes, in lamb, at 12s ; 90 crossbred lambs at 9s 3d, 270 crossbred lambs at Bs. Cattle—l2 dairy cows, in full profit and springing, sold at an average of £5 2s 6d, fat bullocks £7 15s, 8 3-year-old steers at £4 37s 6d, 5 2-year-<*ld steers at £2. 17s 6d, 9 yeailiug steers and heifers at £1 13b 6d. Horses—7 draught horses, broken and unbroken, at prices ranging from £lO to £l6 10s, light harness horses from £lO 10s to £l3. Pigs—s sows, in pig, sold at an average of £5 2s 6d, 13 store pigs at from £1 Is to £1 3s, 4 bacon pigs at £2 2s 6d to £3, 1 pure Yorkshire boar at £4, 1 do £2. Implements—D.F. plough £lO sa, S.F. plough £5, dray £9 15s, spring cart £l2 ; other implements at satisfactory rates. Grain, etc.—Wheat, per bushel, 2s B|d ; beans, 2s 4d; barley, 2s ; Derwent potatoes, per sack, ,3s 10d to 4s. Oakley Farm was passed in at a bid of £l4 per acre.
TIMARU.
Messrs Jonas and Bourn report as follows ; As compared with the corresponding month of last ye»r, a brisk business is doing in ti.e live stool? market, there being a considerable demand both for fat and store stock. At their last sale at the Washdyke free Saleyards there was a strong muster of buyers, nearly every line on their books finding purchasers at current rates. They sold 807
half-bred ewes at 9s Pd, 100 at 11s 6(1, and 64 at lie lOd ; 120 merino ewes at 3s fid, 75 at 4s, 135 at 5s 9d, and 130 at 6s 8d ; 48 half-bred lambs at 6s, and 64 fat wethers at 11s lid. Milch cows were quitted readily at up to £6, springers to £4 : fat cows £5 7s 6d and £5 10s, and fat steers £6 15s to £7 17 steers and heifers in lota acid at up io £3. Their usual sale of sheepskins on Wednesday brought together a full attendance of buyers. A choice lot of skins were catalogued and top prices obained, crossbreds selling as high as 8s 3d and merinos at 4s 2d. For any description of horsos but little demand at present exists, and the sales they have made in their yards do not average more than £l2 10s for good useful draughts. Light harness horses they have sold at from £6 10s to £8 ss, Ordinary hacks find no competition, and values are difficult to fix,
TIMARU PRODUCE MARKETS.
Mr William Evans reports a fair amount of business having been done with farmers during the past week at about the following quotations, delivered by dray and truck to stores, viz.:—Milling wheat, 2s 6d to 2s 9i ; fowl do, Is 6d to 2a ; short oats, Is 6d to la 7d ; Danish and Tartarian feed, Is 2d to Is 4d ; malting barley, 2a 6d to 3s; feed do; Is 6d to 2s ; bags on all grain 6d each ; Derwent potatoes, 45s ; bran, 70s per ton, bags in, f.o.b. Farmers are now selling more freely at quotations, and large lines are being taken up for shipment to Australia.
The Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association report for the week ended 29th May as follows; Wheat—The rparket still remains in a very unsatisfactory state, buyers continuing to hold off. Large quantities are daily coming to hand, and the stores are rapidly filling up. Prices show a slight decline on last week, present values being:—For prime milling red chaff 2s 6d to 2s 7d, Tuscan 2s 7d to 2s 9J, and Velvet 2s 8d to 2s lOd. Inferior qualities move off for fowl feed at Is 9d to 2*. Oats—Oats have sold freely during the week, without, however, any improvement in prices, the supplies being fully equal to the demand. They quote Is 3d to Is 4d for long feed, Is fid to Is 7d for short feed, and Is 8d to Is 9d for good milling. Barley—Barley is dull of sale at 2s 6d to 2s 6d for prime malting, inferior grades are meeting with no demand. Bems—2s 3d, f.o.b.
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.
Adelaide, May 29. Wheat, ex store, is steady at 3s 9d to 3s lOd ; Adelaide flour, town brands, £7 as to £7 10s. Sydney, May, 30. New Zealand wheat, 2s 8d per bushel; oats, 2s 3d; maize, 3s. Sugar Company’s No. I pieces, £26.
