THE WELLINGTON JEWEL ROBBERY.
The police have made two arrests in connection with the late jewellery robbery in Wellington, viz.;—John Davis, a mulatto, at Wellington, and a young man named Appendale, at Lyttelton. The latter had been employed at the Te Aro Hotel, and on the room which he occupied being searched, a couple of keyhole saws were found, also a gimlet, and it is said that in a carpet bag lying in the room some of the missing property was discovered. The police are very reticent. At the R.M. Court, Christchurch, yesterday 7 morning, before R. Beetbam, Esq., 8.M., Herbert Appendale alias John Williams was charged with burglariously entering ttie shop of William Jen ness at Wellington on the night of May 261 h and stealing therefrom watches and jewellery to the value of about £BOO. Inspector Fender said with the permission of the Bench be would abstain from saying much about the case at present. He assured the Bench that part of the stolen property had been traced to the possesof the prisoner, and the police were investigating the matter further. He applied for a remand till Thursday, when he would produse all the evidence that could be obtained and then ask for the prisoner to be further remanded to Wellington. His Worship remanded the prisoner as requested, John Davis, a mulatto, arrested at Wellington on suspicion of being concerned in the robbery, was brought up yesterday morntng charged with receiving a watch knowing the same to have been stolen. The case was remanded until the 4th inst.
