FOOTBALL.
On Saturday last nine or ten players left Temuka for Winchester, where the Winchester members of the Temuka Football Club were awaiting them in order to play a scratch match. Haines and Yelrin picked sides. The latter was fortunate enough to get the heaviest weights and also those gifted with the greatest speed on his side. Thus it was that the former’s men were not able to combat with any success against those of the latter, and they suffered a defeat of one goal and two tries to 1 try. W. Smith, E. Smith, R. Smith, and Haines each obtained a try. Yelrin, by a grand hick, scored the goal on one of the tries : the rest were entrusted to E. Smith, R. Smith, and Gt. Smith, respectively, but all were unsuccessful. On Saturday next another scratch match will be played in the Temuka Park. —The Wellington Football Union hare decided to send a team south, leaving on July 13th.
