WAR IN THE SOUDAN.
Cairo, May 22. General Lord Wolaeley arrived here to-day on his return from Souakim, Telegrams from Alexandria report the arrival there of the transport haying on board the Guards. Aden, May 22, The Union Company’s s.s. Arab, which has been chartered to convey the New South Wales contingent to Australia, arrived here yesterday and subsequently left for Sydney. The troops who were ordered from here to Souakim have returned. London, May 2]. Lieutenant Brown, of the New South Wales contingent, has died from fever. In the House of Commons to-day, the Marquis of Hartington, Secretary of State for the War Department, announced in reply to a question that the Government did not deem it desirable at the present juncture to explain the reason why the Guards had been detained at Alexandria to await orders. The Marquis of Hartington added that the massing of troops recently employed in the Soudan, with a view to their being available for service elsewhere, was being continued. Mr Gladstone informed the House that negotiations has been carried on with the Sublime Porte for Turkish occupation of Souakim, but that no other Power had been invited to occupy that place. ,
