It is announced that the second reading of the Federation Enabling Bill will not be moved in the House of Commons until after the Whitsuntide recess. Mr Gladstone in the course of a speech in the House of Commons referred to the early close of his political career. It is reported from Newcaiile that the 6chooner Grace Lynn collided with the steamer Naomi at that port last night. The Grace Lynn sank shortly after the collision. Her crew was picked up by the Naomi. No lives were lost. May 21. Sailed—Union Company's s.s. Wakatipu, for Wellington, this afternoon. The Pacific Mail Company's R.M.S. City of Sydney also sailed this afternoon, with the Ilomoward San Francisco mails. She has on board £57,000 of specie. The drought still continues, and great inconvenience is experienced in the district in consequence of the scarcity of water. In tue country districts rain is badly wanted, Melbourne, May 20. Sailed—Union Company's s.s. Manapouri for the Bluff this afternoon. May 2J. A series of experiments were made yesterday afternoon at Fitzroy with a gas motor for tramcars. A car containing 20 persons travelled at the rate of 9£ miles an hour, and the trial proved a complete success.
