ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, May 12. It is understood that the million loan for New Zealand will shortly be placed on the market. The Queensland loan is expected to be a success. In the House of Commons the Hon. G. J. Goschen will probably move the omission in the Federation Bill of clause 31, which provides for the withdrawal of a colony. Captain Penrose, of the Engineers, has been selected as an officer to proceed to New South Wales. May 13. At a meeting of the London Chamber of Commerce last night, Sir William McArthur in the chair, a resolution was passed to establish an Australian Trade Section in the Chamber, and it was decided to take steps to carry out the resolution. The section includes forty colonists, with Sir William McArthur as Chairman.

In the House of Commons last night Mr Gladstone announced that a Bill would be introduced shortly enabling Parliament to dissolve in November next (sic). Tenders were opened to-day for the Victorian loan of £4,000,000 at 4 per cent., the minimum for which was fixed at £99. Tenderers at £IOO 13s will receive 80 per cent, of the applications; above that sum in full. The official average is £IOO 13s 9d. There were 1153 tenders, covering £11,495,000. Advices from {Saskatchewan slate that a pitched battle took place on Monday last between General Middleton’s forces and the rebels under Louis Riel, resulting in the enemy being ousted from the rifle pits at the point of the bayonet. During the struggle the Battouche Indians managed to rescue a number of prisoners whp were in custody of the Canadians. The loss on Middleton’s side was 16 killed and wounded, whilst a large number of Riel’s men were killed.

Sydney, May 14. The New (South Wales Contingent is under orders to return to Australia, It will leave Souakim for Sydney on the Bth Juue. The Right Rev. Dr Moran, Roman Catholic Archbishop of'Sydney, leaves for Rome on the 12th June. He expects to be back in Australia by December next. Melbourne, May 13.
