GERALDINE LITERARY INSTITUTE.

A meeting of the Committee was held in the Institute on Thursday evening. Present—Rev. Jas, Preston (President, in the chair), and Messrs J. Cunningham, J. Huffey, J. Satterthwaite, G. W, Westropp, and the Secretary, E. HarJcastle. MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, COEEESEONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows: From the Education Department, Wellington, notifying that £l2 5s 6d bad been forwarded as the Institute’s portion of the grant of £4OOO devoted to public libraries. From Messrs Bell and Badfute, Edinburgh, acknowledging receipt of the balance of account due for the books lately obtained from them. From the Mechanics’ Institute, Oxford, asking the Committee to join them in an order for books from the above firm.—Letters acknowledged. From Mr T. Hardcastle, jun., Woodbury, resigning bis seat on the Committee, as be was leaving the district. He reported on behalf of the branch library at Woodbury that there were now only seven subscribers, who wished, as they had paid their subscriptions to the end of the year, that the branch be kept on for another year, Mr Greaves having care of the books. —Proposed by Mr Cunningham, seconded by Mr Waite —“ That the resignation of Mr Hardcastle be accepted with regret, and that the Secretary forward to him the thanks of the Committee for the valuable services he had rendered whilst a member of the (Jommittse. Carried unanimously. It was unanimously resolved on the motion of Mr Cunningham, seconded by Mr Waite—“ That Mr J. Greaves be elected to the seat on the Committee rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr Hardcastle.” It was resolved that the consideration of kerbing and ashpalling the footpath in front of the Institute be left over to a full meeting. The Secretary and Mr Iluffey were empowered to ascertain the cost and obtain some matting for reading room floor.

This being all the business, a vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
