GARALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this Board was held in their office on Monday evening. Present—Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairman), J. Huffey, N. Dunlop, R. Taylor and J. Mundell. The Clerk and Overseer, Mr C. E. Sherratt, was in attendance. MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The outwards correspondence was read and approved. Inwards it was read and considered, as follows From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, in reply to a letter from the Board’s ranger, stating he approved of the course suggested by the ranger in reference to the destruction of timber in the reserves in the Raukapuka bush within the Town District.—The Chairman stated that these steps were being taken as it was found that persons were removing firewood, etc., from the reserves. From the Property Tax Department, forwarding memo, requesting the Board to allow the valuers access to maps, rolls, etc. From the Treasury, Wellington, notifying the payment of £5 to the Board’s credit for fees, fines, etc., collected during the month of March. From the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, in reference to same. From the Registrar-General, asking for certain statistics.—The same had been furnished. From the Manager of the Timaru Gas Company, giving price for coal tar. From the newly-formed Town Board of Southbridge, asking for a copy of by-laws and other information.—The same had been forwarded. From Messrs Booth, Macdonald and Co,, Christchurch, giving prices for iron lamp-posts and lamps. FINANCIAL. On the motion of Mr Dunlop, seconded by Mr Mundell, it was resolved to place £IOOO on fixed deposit for 12 months, all arrangements to be left to Finance Committee.—The Chairman stated that £1313 12s 11 o was lying to the credit of the Board at the Bank, Messrs Huffey, Mundell and Taylor were elected a Finance Committee for the ensuing month. THE COURTHOUSE. The Chairman said some steps should be taken in regard to the Courthouse. He thought it would be best to write to the Member for the District and ask him to urge upon the Minister for Justice the necessity of providing a more suitable building, as the present Courthouse was

totally inadequate for the purposes required. It was then resolved that tho Clerk write to the Member for the District. ASPHALTING. It was resolved to asphalt the footpath in front of the new Town Board office. Mr Taylor suggested that a email atrip be asphalted the whole length of the footpath through the town, if owners «£ property adjoining would contribute something towards the cost. The strip to-be done in the centra of the path. It was resolved that tho Clerk inquire whether owners of property would be agreeable to such a step, and to report to next meeting. reserve 15. The Chairman said he had seen Mr Postleth waite since last meeting in reference to tho reserve in tho riverbed claimed by Mr Postlethwaite. The latter Lad been to Christchurch and found be had no claim to it. TENDERS. The following tenders were opened and considered - Contract No. 15.—Ironwork for lamps : W, Heney, £l3 10s; J, Ogilvie, £9 18s 6d (accepted). Contract No. 16.—Making lamps : J. Ogilvie, £4 5s 6d ; J. Fleming, 9s 6d per lamp (accepted). Contract No. 17. —Dressing posts and fixing : J. Ogilvie, £3 5s (accepted). Contract No. 18.—Lighting lamps ; S. Baxter, £49 10s; Newport and Sutherland, £47 10s (accepted). Contract No. 19.—Breaking atones : Gardner and Bateman, £9 ; Jonas Fiefield, £7 ; Thos. Grindall, £6 11s ; Jas. Beckley, £6 10s (accepted). overseer’s report. The Overseer's report for the month ended MarchT2tb, was read as follow* : “ Harding and Frude have been working in Macdonald street, cutting a catch water drain on top of the bank, and paving the foot of the same to prevent scour. The late heavy rain caused the latter work to sink in places on account of the depth of filling in required in places, and the work not having had sufficient time to consolidate. The repairs will be attended to at Once. The men have also been working on nearly every'road in the Town District. “ Croton, the asphalter has commenced to lay asphalt down in places bat is greatly in need of a better and heavier roller to make a good job of the work. The Works Committee are in treaty for one which ought to have arrived before this. Ten casks of tar have been obtained and the necessary selvas, shovels, etc., have been purchased on account of the Board. I would like to know if the Board will bare a concrete kerbiug and asphalt put down in front of the new offices, and also would be glad for instructions as to the floors in the back shed, and firewood house. 1 have a number of concrete blocks at the yard that could be used to make a good job of tho floor. I think some notice should be put up in places to prevent the newly-laid asphalt from being damaged in the manner it is. Mr Dierck has three sacks of lime and two casks of cement which he.. will sell to the Board very reasonable. Tenders will be laid before you for lamps and lighting in four contracts, and the lighting for 12 months. Since last meetthe accounts of the Board have been audited, and found correct, and the books are lying on the table.—l have, etc., “ C. E. Sherratt, “ Overseer and Clerk to the Board."

It was resolred to hare the korbing done in front of the new offices, and on the motion of Mr Dunlop, seconded bj Mr Taylor, it was resolved to obtain the necessary material for pitting down the concrete kerking. It was resolved to accept Mr Dierck's offer of the cement and lime. He the flooring, it was resolved to down the concrete blocks on hand. ranger’s report. Mr W. G. Sberratt, stock ranger for the Board, reported on the number of stock impounded during the month. It was resolved to instruct the ranger to impound all horses found at large and lay informations against owners according to the By-Laws. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £56-19s 3d were passed for payment. The Board then resolved itself into a BOARD OP HEALTH, The Inspector of Nuisances’ report was read as follows ; “ With reference to the sanitary statu of the town district I have nothing of any great importance to lay before you. I must say that the recent rains bavu done good at the back of the new Board's present' office The drain has at times times run well through the little park since it has been cleaned out, and a con* siderable amount ,of filth which beforetime lodged in Mr Cunningham's paddock has been removed, but the outcome could be improved still further. Upon the whole the sanitary state of the town has improved,—l am, etc., “0. E. Shebratt," “ Inspector of Nuisances.” It was resolved to write to the Registrar of the Canterbury Canterbury College, asking permission to remove the pipe drain on the reserve at the back of Messrs Tasker and Co.’s premises. This being all tbe business the Board adjourned till the 20th inst.
