DEFENCE MATTERS.
Steps ore being taken to form a Volunteer corps in Waimale. The Waihora has arrived at Auckland from. Sydney, and brings eight 64pounder guns and other warlike stores for Government. Lieutenant Stapleton and five other seamen of the Royal Navy are among her passengers. The eight 64pouoder guns will be distributed throughout the colony. Captain Badham, who will have charge of the New Zealand Artillery, has arrived in the colony, bat will inspect the southern defences before going to Wellington. It has not yet been decided whether the Militia will be called out, but in any case, unless hostilities occur between Russia and England, they will only be called out at Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin. Major Cautley and Captain Badham arrived at Dunedin on Monday. They inspected the defence works at the Heads yesterday and then proceeded to Lyttelton. The defence works have been delayed by recent bad weather.
