CAVALRY MEETING.

A meeting of the members of the proposed Cavalry Corps for Geraldine was held in the Bush Hotel on Monday evening. Owing to the Bhort notice that had been given, only about a dozen persons were present. Mr R. H. Postlethwaite was voted to the chair, and the minutes of last meeting were read find confirmed. The Secretary (Mr Webster) reported that he had written to Captain Wright, of Timaru, asking for information respecting the formation of a corps, cost of uniforms, etc, Captain Wright was away from home, and Mr W. S. Lindsay, sergeant in the C.Y.C., had replied on hit behalf, which reply Mr Webater now read. Mr Lindsay stated there was hot the slightest chance of the Government accepting the services of a separate corps, but that as the Timaru contiogent were laking stt-ps to have their Btrength increased, they would be only too glad to have the Geraldine men as part of their Company. The cost of uniforms would be about £l4, but that would be considerably lessened if tenders were called for supplying a number. In reply to a second letter from Mr Webster, Mr Lindsay stated that the Geraldine men would be drilled as recruits in Geraldine. They would, however, have to attend the annual training in October of each year. The letters from Mr Lindsay gave other particulars regarding the c,orps, and he eulogised the C.Y.C. as being one of the best troops in New Zealand. " Mr Webster had also written to the Hon, W. Rolleston, who bai replied to the effect that he had written to the pefence Minister, Mr Rallance, urging him to accept the services of the Geraldine Corpß, and the writer stated he would forward reply as soon as it was to hand. Mr Ballance had also been written to, and, in order that a reply from him should be before the present meeting, two telegrams had been sent him by Mr Postlethwaite, but no reply had been received, . Mr Postlethwaite informed the meeting that he had been to Timaru, and had seen Captain Dundas, the Cavalry instructor, who informed bim that he would come out to Geraldine to drill them, and there was no fear of their having to go into Timaru for drill, except on occasion; Mr Postlethwaite thought that the sooner the corps were started the- better, as they would have to serve in the militia if it were called out for active .service. He would suggest that a fresh list be drawn out, as those who joined the .first on did so on the underStanding that they were to form a separate corps. Perhaps some might object to join with Timaru. Mr Webster suggested that another meeting be called by advertisement, so as to get as many to attend as possible, and, after a little further diccussion the speaker moved the following resolution :—:" That we form ourselves into a contingent of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cava'ry, providing that our Bervicss as such be accepted." This was seconded by Mr M. Connolly and carried unanimously, It.was resolved lo adjourn the meeting till Friday evening next, at the same time and place, and that the Secretary take steps to have an officer of the C.Y.C. prreent to enroll the meu. The names of. all persons in the district likely to joiu were (hen taken down,

several in the room promising to canvas for recruits in their respective districts. A vote r.f thanks to the chair terminated the meeting:.
