Cairo, April 26. A report was prevalent to-day to the effact that diplomatic relations had been broken off bat ween France and Egypt, bat the announcement is premature M. Camille Bnrrirere, the French Minister to this Court, was actually instructed, however, by his Government to leave yesterday, failing satisfaction being afforded for the suppression of the Boaphore Egyptienne. His departure, however, has been postponed, owing to negotiations for a compromise having been initiated, and there is now a hope of affairs progressing in the direction of a peaceful solution of the difficulty.

Melbourne, April 24. Arrived, this morning—Rotomahana from the Bluff. A medical enquiry into the alleged outbreak of smallpox at Gotham shows that the patient was only suffering from chickenpox. Sydney, April 25. The intercolonial eight-oar boatrace was rowed to-Jay on the. Parramatta river. Craws from four colonies were entered for the event, which has hitherto been between Victoria and New South Wales. A splendid race took place, resulting in a victory for the New South Wales crew by two lengths, Victoria second, Tasmania third, and Queensland last.
