FOOTBALL.

The opening match of the season was played last Saturday in tha Temuka Park. There were about 20 players present, including a contingent from Winchester, and a most enjoyable game was played. Sides were chosen by Messrs Haines and R. Smith, the respective captains of the Temuka and Winchester Clubs. The game resulted in a win for Smith’s side by one goal and two tries to oil. Two of the *ries were obtained by the captain, one of which was converted into a goal by J. W. Yelvin, who also attempted the other] tries, but a strong wind prevailing prevented them scoring further. The third trv was got by E. Spxith (Milford). The playing on the whole was very creditable. Some of the players indulged in very good passing. Of those who distinguished themselves we might mention the names of Messrs Haines, G. Smith, Blyth, Gray, and Harte. A gentle hint might be given to the forwards of both sides to play a little more together. Wa noticed that invariably one or two stood quite out of the scrimmages, thus getting in the way of the half-backs, and preventing them doing more successful work. We are pleased to find that the Winchester players are uniting with the Temuka Club. It is proposed that a number of players from Temuka should pay a visit to Winchester next Saturday.
