The Temuka Leader THURSDAY, APRIL 16, 1885. TEMUKA YOUNG MEN’S CLUB.
Next Friday evening a meeting will be held to decide whether the Young Men's Club room is to be closed, and the furniture sold. Thip news ought to stir up all the young men in the district to take immediate action, so as to prevent this being done. The Committee have not arrived at this conclusion without having sufficient reason for it. During the summer months the Club room has been totally deserted, and only from ten to twenty members have paid their subscriptions. All this time the rent and caretaker's salary have been running on, with the result that the Treasurer of the Club has found it impossible to pay his way. Of course things could not go on in this way : a decided step had to be taken before the Club reached insolvency, and hence the action of the Committee in calling the meeting. Every effort had been previously made to get the members to c>me together, but all resulted in failure. Three or four meetings were callt'd, and only the same members turned up .always; but these had paid up their subscriptions, and consequently nothing was gained. We trust that now—when the point of danger has been reached, and when to delay another minute must mean the termination of the ; Club—the young men will come forward to the rescue. They did not want it during the aummei months certainly, but the winter is now setting in, and if they keep the Club room rpen they will find it very convenient when the frost and snow set in, From the beginning it was predicted that the Club would not live long, as the members would not stick together. We are afraid that this prediction will be fulfilled, and if it is it will not be credit<ibleto the members. We have frequently suggested the advisability of amalgamating with the Mechanics' Institute, and if this had bpen done while the list of members was still large everything would have gone m all right. The idea was opposed on the ground that the Club would losa, its individuality, but now it will lose not only its individuality but its very existence. If the young men took our advice they would rally round it now, pay up their subscriptions, amalgamate with the Me chanics' Institute, and reduce the yearly subscription to 10s a year, and then they would have a most suitable place, in a central position, for 10s per annum. They can do all we suggest easily, and the Mechanics' Institute will be benefitted bv it.
