From Mr James Cain, asking for planks for a drain crossing into Mr S. Cain’s farm at Winchester.—The application was granted. From Mr J. Ollivier, auditor, expressing great satisfaction at the manner in which Mr Bolton had kept the accounts, From Mr Ruddenklau, calling attention to the impassable condition of the road along the Island.—The Overseer was instructed to attend to the matter.
From Mr Walter Kitson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, stating that on the 24(h •f May, 1862, the Provincial Council paid the Chairman of the Native Oommisioners of Reserves for 5 acres 2 roods of the Arowhenua Reserve at the rate of £l2 per acre. As this agreed with the road for which the Natives claimed payment, he now had no doubt it was the land which had thus been paid for. From the Prop-rty Tax Commissioner, intimating that £l9 39s lOd had been paid to the credit of the Board on account ot rates of Crown Lands.
From the Manager of Newlands, slating ..that the Canal Drain wanted .deepening and cleaning.—lt was decided to reply that the Board has been advised by the Overseer that no injury is being done to the road by the drain, nor is it apprehended (hat there is much prospective damage being done by it. The Board must therefore decline to do anything at present. The Board had already decided that the drain would not be cleared unless it injured the road. From the Registrar-General, asking for certain information respecting the receipts and expenditure of the Board for the past year.—The information was ordered to be supplied. INTERVIEW, Mr John Malarkey waited on the Board in reference to the drain running through his property. He said that owing to it having been blocked up last spring he had lost his crop, for which he now claimed damages. He suggested that the Board should appoint one valuator and he would appoint another to assess the damage done to his crops last spring. In reply to a question as to why he had not complained before he said he had frequently complained to the late Overseer, and got no satisfaction.—After some conversation it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Barker, seconded by Mr Smith “ That the Board must decline to accede to Mr Malarkey’s request that a person be seat to assess the alleged damage he
lias sustained by flood water, as the Board are not at present prepared to admit that they have caused any damage to him.”
THE BOUNDARY ROADS, As regards the Boundary Roads, the Overseer said he did not know what arrangements existed between the two Boards as to permanent works on those roads. After considerable discussion, it was decided—“ That it is advisable to readjust the arrangements with the Geraldine Board re maintenance of the Boundary Road, and that the Overseer be requested to interview the Surveyor of the Geraldine Road Board, and endeavor to make an arrangement on an equitable basis, and submit the same to the next meeting of the Board for approval. The Geraldine Board to be written to asking them to agree to this proposal.” NEW ELECTION, The Chairman brought under the notice of the Board that a new election would have to take place in May, and that the three members who would retire by rotation were Messrs Talbot, Paterson, and Barker. —The Returning Officer was ordered to be informed of this, and the Clerk was ordered to prepare a balancesheet for presentation to the annual meeting. overseer’s report. The Overseer’s report was read as follows; “Temuka, 14th April, 1885. “ To the Chairman. “ Sir, —Tenders have been called for cleaning Malarkey’s Drain, and for shingling about 45 chains of the Boundary Road, The shingle for this work lam getting from Mr E. Smith’s land at the rate of 2d per yard. By doing so I estimate it will cost per yard less than if it had been taken from the Eae-hw-te-raoana river. “ The increased rate of wages sanctioned by the Board has been allowed for seven weeks, and during that lime only the most necessary works have been undertaken. Since then I have had the stones picked off Rolleston’s Road and the drains cleaned out. 1 have also had Penny’s Road Drain cleaned, and other small jobs done. “Pert of the road between Braddock’s and Thorpe’s was dangerous and almost impassable from large ruts having washed in the centre of the cuttings. I am having it repaired. “ The road running from the Main Waitohi Road past Friel's, towards the Gully Bush, is unsafe from the same cause. It would probably cost £ — to fill the ruts and re-crown part of the road enough to throw the water into the side channels. “ Part of Denmark street requires draining, as in wet weather the water lies on each side of it between its junction with Hayhurst and Rayner streets. This being the main road through Arowhenua township, some provision should be made for the water to get away. Two wooden culverts in this street would have to be replaced. “The drain along Clyne’s Road requires cleaning, and also Toner's Road Drain. The drain from Barker’s Road to the Orari Township should be cleaned, as it is full of rushes. It is dry now, and could be ploughed. ■
“The Main Roads will require a good deal of attention this winter.
“ The Bridge on the Arownenua Creek (Tavender’s Bridge) requires re-decking. “ I have served a number of notices re gorse. lam now waiting for a supply of forms.
“ There are no Gin. pipes in stock. “F. Archer, “ Overseer.” It was decided that the Overseer's recommendations be adopted witii regard to the road running from Waitohi Road to Gully Bush, Denmark Street, Drains on dyne’s, Toner’s, and Orari Roads, and Tavender’s Bridge.
