GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday, at which Messrs Tulbot (Chairman),' Moody and Mackay were present. A letter from the Railway Department was read promising to consider the question of attaching a carriage for stockdrivers to the stock-trains. A letter from the Ashburton County Council was read enclosing an account for half the cost of repairing the Rangitata bridge. It was explained that the repairs cost £1 10s, and the engineers expenses were £l, and it was decided to pay half the expenses. A letter was read from the Public Works' Department with reference to the Council's application for a further grant of £553 for the Opihi Bridge, -The letter was referred to the Engineer. The Chairman stated that Mr Compton wished to show the Council a plan he had devised for river protection, and it was decided to invite him to be pres«nt at next meeeing. Letters referring to Mr Dyson's appointment as registrar of dogs were read. The application of Mr McCallum for a slaughtering license for killing piga on the Maori reserve, at Epworth, was granted, subject to the approval of the Temuka Road Board. Mr Moody brought forward the question of irrigation. His reason for doing so was to let the public know that if they wanted anything done in the matter, the public themselves must take the initiative. The Chairman said hard times and wet weather had combined against the scheme being carried out in the Waitohi district. He did not like to push it on the people unduly. Accounts to the amount of £336 17s 5d were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
