WOODBURY RACES. Judge—Mr 1). McKenzie. Starter —Mr W. Lawson. Clerk of Couese —Mr James Quaid. Handicapper—Mr D. McKenzie, Clerk of the Scales—Mr J. H. Dean. Secretary and Treasurer—Mr J. Harmer. Stewards —Messrs E. Evans, T. Dooley, S, Gould, M. E. Heatley, J. Quaid, J. Fiefield, J. 11. Dean, aud C. Jansen.
The second annual meeting of the Woodbury Jockey Club came off on Monday last, and was, on the whole, a yery successful one. The course was—the same as used last year—laid off in a paddock of Mr Allan Macdonald's on tho opposite side of the road from the homestead. It was rather rough, but fair times were made on it, and there were no accidents. The weather was beautifully fine, the heat during the afternoon being equal to midsummer. The attendance of spectators was not large, however, but all took great interest in the racing. The Volunteer review at Orari attracted nearly all the Geraldine people, and not many went from the latter place to Woodbury, The gathering was a most orderly, one and despite the temptation of the day to "indulge" there was not a disorderly person on the ground. The racing, taking it altogether, was first class, and the promptness of the officers in getting the eventß off as near time as possible made the meeting pass off smoothly, Only one hitch occurred during the day, and this was after the "Two-Year-Old Race, when a protest was entered againsi the winner for running inside a post. The protest was not entered, however, until tho totalisator had paid out on the horse first past the post. After taking evidence, the Stewards adjourned (heir decision until (he even-1
ing. Messrs Mason and Roberts had a totalisator on the ground, and did a fair amount of business. They are to be commended for their enterprise in bringing up a machine, as it tended to much more interest being taken in the racing. The various officers performed their duties satisfactorily ; the Judge had little or no trouble in giving Lis decisions, and the Starter sent his fields oway very evenly. A little more firmness is required, however, and the jockeys should not get quite so much license as was the case at the start of one race. The Clerk of the Course had very little to do, as the people's "stand" was on the inside of the course. Another year he will need to exercise a little more care, and not get in the way of the horses coming past, as an accident which happened from this cause might have been attended with very serious results. The Clerk of the Scales gave satisfaction, and a word of praise is due to the Hon. Secretary, Mr Uarmer, tor the manner in which he worked during the day. Mr T. Dooley, of the Woodbury Hotel, had a general license booth, and did a good trade. The refreshment booth was also well patronised. - I The following are the details of the races : Handicap Hurdles, of 15 sovs. 1^ miles, over six flights of hurdles ; open to all horses in the district that have never won public money of more than dSIS in one Hurdle race. After rounding the turn past the stand, Black Prince wont to the front, and Little Doll, upon whom the weight was beginning to tell, began to lose srround. Vinco stuck to the leader, 'and"they were neck and neck on coming I into the straight. A hard race ensued up the straight to the post, both horses being hard ridden, Vinco ultimately winning ; by a short half length, Little Doll a fair third. An unfortunate accident occurred to Black Prince at the close of the race. The horse collided with the Clerk of the Course, coming down heavily, throwing Bradbury over his head. The rider escaped with a shaking and a slight sprain to the wrist, but Black Prince it waa found had injured one of his fore legs badly, but it is hoped it will not be a permanent injury.
