London, April 1.
Mr George Anderson, M.P. for Glasgow, who has been appointed Deputy-Master of the Royal Mint of Melbourne, has been presented by his constituents with a purse of sovereigns valued at £ISOO. April 2. Intelligence is to hand that a civil war has broken out in Central America owing to an attempt on the part of the Republic of Guatemala to force the adjoiner States of Nicaragua, San Salvador and Costa Rica to enter into federation with herself. A pitched battle recently took place between the forces of Guatemala and those of Sani Salvador, with the result that the troopa of the former country were completely defeated. The Republic of Mexico has sided with Nicaragua and the other States, and it is marching against Guatemala. A revolution has; also broken out in the United States of Columbia, and the insurgents have captured and burned Aspinwall (or Colon), on the northern side of the' Isthmus of Panama.
The commercial treaty which has been entered into between England and Spain has been ratified by King Alfonso. Mr Dion Boucicault, the actor, who is under engagement to Messrs Williamson, Garner and Musgrove for a tour of the Australian colonies, will open in Melbourne in July. April 3. The death is announced, at the age of 66, of Viscount Cairns, late Lord Chancellor of England. April 5. It is announced that General Barrios, President of the Republic of Guatemala, was killed at the recent battle with the troops at San Salvador. The Legislative Assembly of Guatemala has annulled the decree recently passed providing for the federation of that State with the Republics of San Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Paris, April 3.
It is announced that General Bontauge, at present French commander at Tunis, has been appointed to the Bupreme command of the forces at Tonquin. He will leave shortly for that country.
M. de Freycinet has been unsnccesi:al in his endeavors to lorm a Ministry, April 4.
It is considered doubtful if China will accept the terms of peace proposed by M. Ferry, as the recent negotiations for a peaceful settlement, and which were commenced by M. Patenotre, the French Minister to China, were of aa entirely informal character.
Hong Kong, April 2.
News has come to hand that a French naval force, under the command of Admiral Courbet, has occupied the Piscadoro Islands, between Formosa and the mainland of China, after a severe engagement with the Chinese troopa occupying the islands.
Washington, April 2.
The United Stated Government are' sending a man-of-war force of marines to the Isthmus of Panama, in order to keep open traffic on the railway between Aspinwall and Panama, which has been obstructed in consequence of the rebellion in Columbia.

Melbourne, April 1. The quarterly revenue returns show the revenue of the past three months as £1,680,000, being an increase over the corresponding quarter of 1884 of £40 } o<>o. April 2. The deaths are announced of the Hon. James Macpherson Grant, late Chief Secretary of Victoria, and Mr Hugh M'Coll, M.L.A. for Maudurang. Adelaide, April 2. A match commenced here to-day between Shaw's English Eleven and Fifteen of South Australia. The Eng. glishmen went first to the wickets, and when tho stumps were drawn had lost five wickets for 219. Sydnet, April 1. The election for Argyle, which took place yesterday, resulted in the return of Sir Henry Parkcs. The revenue returns for tho quarter ended March 31st show the receipts to
be £1,640,000, an increase over the .. corresponding quarter of 1884 ot ' £142,000. The principal increase in the revenue is from lands ami customs. April 4. Preparations haye been completed for a grand review of the naval forces in the harbor on Monday next Arrived—Hauroto, s.s., on the afternoon of the 3rd. Sailed—Rotomahana, s.s., on the morning of the 3rd. April 4. Arrived, yesterday afternoon—Orient E.M.S. Garonne, with the London mails to February 27tb. The cricket match was continued here to-day, and at the close of the play the ' Englishmen were all out for 367.
