The race for the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase was won by Captain Fisher's b h Roquefort, Brigade second, Black Prince third.

Cunningham and Burton, the men arrested on the charge of being concerned in the recent dynamite outrages on the House of Commons and Tower, and who are supposed to be connected with the explosions on the railways some time ago, have been committed for trial.
Eight hundred thousand pounds o' the New South Wales Loan have been paid by the Associated Banks. The French Parliament have increased the duties on imported cattle. Serious, fighting is imminent between the Central American Republics. A detachment of police sent from Manitoba have succeeded in ousting the rebels from Fort Saskatchewan, with a loss of ten men. The rebels lost eighty men. Much 30. Referring to the sculling match for the championship of the world, the Sportsman is doubtful whether Beach would be able to conclude a match with an English sculler. Obituary Princ* Orloff, formerly Russian Ambassador at Paris. An order has been granted for the compulsory winding up of the South Australian Copper Mining Company. The Queen left London to-day for Aix-les-Bains, in Savoy, which place has been recommended by her medical advisers. March 31. The French are very much incensed at the action taken by M. Ferry in regard to affairs in Tonquin. In the Chamber of Deputies M. Clemenceau characterised M. Ferry's action as treasonable, and a motion to that effect was tabled, but it was rejected. The war grant is collapsing. The French loss in Tonquin is estimated at 1500, Large crowds Chinese are menacing the position held by the French. Paris, March 29. Advices from Tonquin state that the French have been greatly outnumbered in a recent engagement with the Chinese, and have been compelled to. •vacuate Langson, which place-they recently occupied. General Negrier, who is in charge of operations, has been severely wounded. General Briere De Lisle, Commander-in Chief, applied to the Government for further reinforcements.

In the Chamber of Deputies to-day a discussion took place on the motion for a further credit of 200,000,000 fr. for military operations in Tonquin, with the result that the Government were defeated. The Premier, M. Jules Ferrj, has accordingly placed the resignation of himself and his colleagues in the hands of the President, March 31. The population of this city is considerably excited over the present crisis in political affairs. The general tone of public opinion is in favor of a vigorous prosecution of military operations in Tonquin. President Grevy has summoned.M. de Freycinet, and entrusted him with the tusk of forming a new Ministry. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. MELBOURNE, March 31. Arrived—The P. and 0. R.M.S.
