AN EXPLANATION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l notice in the report of the R.M. Court, held in Temuka on the 25th inst., I was charged with creating a disturbance at the Temuka Hotel, and, having admitted the charge, was fined £l. If the facts of the case had been properly stated, it would have thrown a completely different light upon the affair. On the morning of the 18th I had ridden over forty miles, and my horse becoming knocked up, after I left Temuka, I returned to put him up for the night ; and the Temuka Hotel being the first house I met, I endeavored to rouse the landlord to provide accommodation for myself and the horse. I succeeded in waking him, and he refused to admit me, saying he could not accommodate me. 1 told him under the circumstances I thought he was compelled to. After this he shut the door, and told me to go to——. I reported this to Constable Morton, and he advised me to go home, as h« couldn’t do anything for me. The charge I admitted was simply kicking the door to wake Mr Chamberlain, and, not being able to spare time to attend the Court to answer the charge, I wrote to the Clerk of the Court admitting the charge of kicking at the door; but as for Mr Chamberlain stating that 1 was drunk, I deny that I was drunk —proof of which X can furnish. No doubt Mr Chamberlain had to make good his excuses before the Bench for not taking me in, tor I, upon being refused, threatened to report the matter to the Licensing Committee, — I am, etc., Henry Coulter, Rangitata.
