FATAL FIRE NEAR AUCKLAND.

Additional particulars re the burning of the Tamahere Hole’, Auckland, show that Mr Camp, publican, was aroused by two men who were riding past. When awakened he at once made for the staircase, hut when half down he was driven back by the flames and smoke, and waking up Ins eldest son, Harry, about 16, told him to try and save his brothers. He then got out of one of {he front windows, and clambered along a parapet and let himself down down by a lamp over the door. He then got a ladder used for lighting the lamp, and put it to Mr* Camp’s window. He succeeded without great trouble in getting her and her newborn baby out of the window, also four little children. In the meantime Harry Camp had got hold of one of his brothers (Willie) and carried him to escape by the staircase, which rims up the back of the house. There he met a man who took the child from him. Harry then faced the fire, and tried to get back and save his brothers Edward, aged 4, and Albert aged 11. The flames and smoko beat him back, and sweeping over him forced him to iump through the flames by the window at the back. He was severely burnt about the head and chest, and one or his arms was broken. He now lie* at Mr Armstrong’s house in a precarious condition, attended by Dr. Cashney. Two of the boys, Edward and Albert, perished in the flames, Willie Camp was also severely burnt, but is in no danger. It is supposed the fire was caused by ashes blowing under the hotel. Mr Camp Las lost every penny, the insurance being in favour of a building society.
