He also recognises the public and private liberality shown in the mattes.
' Cairo,- March ,9. Ik is reported frond Korti that the Mahdi has forbidden the Arab tribes, who arc his followers, to harass the British troops, as he is confident the latter will £be destroyed by the climate during the coming summer.

The Gorernor has received a telegram from the Lord Mayor of London congratulating the colony upon its patriotic support to the Mother Country, Melbourne, March 9.
The Age to-day opposed tba idea of despatching a Victorian contingent to the Soudan, and advocates the strentheniug of local defences. No enthusiasm is displayed here in connection with the proposed Victorian contingent.
March 10.
The Cabinet to-day decided to communicate with the South Australian and Queensland Governments to ascertain their views regarding the proposed Soudan contingent, and only act conjointly with them ; afterwards to refer the question to Parliament, which meets on the 81st.
Auckland, March 9.
Some of the clergy in their discourses yesterday denounced the movement of volunteering for the Soudan.
