GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held at their offices on Wednesday evening. Present—Messrs R. H. Pearpoiut (Chairman), R. Taylor, N. Dunlop, W. S. Maslin, T. Farrell, J. Huffey, and J. Mundell. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following outward correspondence was read To Dr Foster, forwarding particulars of the reserves for which the leases were to be made out. To the Registrar Canterbury College, referring him to a former letter of the Board,
To the Secretary of the Treasury, Wellington, acknowledging receipt of his letter advising the payment to the credit of the Board the sum of £3 for fees, fines, and penalties under the By-laws. To Messrs Tasker and Co., asking them to abate the nuisance caused by foul water flowing from their premises. To Mr J, Cunningham, informing him that steps were being taken to abate the nuisance complained of by him. To Mr Smart, of Christchurch, and Mr Hampson, asking them for a price for laying down asphalt. The following inward correspondence was also read and considered :
From Mr Walter Kitson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking if the Clerk and Overseer to the Board would undertake the duties of ranger, to look after the Bush reserves in the Town district.—Mr Sherratt agreed to do so, and his offer was accepted by the Board. From Mr Smart, saying he would be down from Christchurch early, in reference to putting down asphalt.—The Chairman informed the meeting that Mr Smart had been down, and had agreed to lay down the asphalt for per yard. It was resolved to let the matter stand over till an offer had been received from Mr Hampson. * From J. Hrrding, surfaceman to the Board, requesting that the Board grant him Is per day more wages.—Air the members bore testimony to the faithful manner iit which Mr Harding did his work, but the Board did not see their way clear to grant him an increase of his wages as he offered to work for the Board for the wages he was now getting. The following resolution proposed by Mr Maalin and seconded by Mr Huffey was carried “ That the surfacemen’s wages remain as they are.” An amendment proposed by Mr Taylor and seconded by Mr Mundell—“ That Harding’s wages be 5s per day ” —was lost, WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT.
The shingling of the footpaths from Huffay’s to Mcllraith’s, which was authorised at last meeting of the Board, was left in the hands of the Overseer, and through a misunderstanding of some sort a cost of £l7 for shingling was incurred, whereas it was understood that from £3 to £4 would cover the necessary wotk. To prevent the recurrence of any future mistake of the kind, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Maslin —“That neither the Overseer or the Works Committee be authorised to expend a larger sum than £5 on any contingent work between meetings.” On the motion of Mr Farrell, Messrs Taylor, Dunlop and Maslin were appointed a fresh Works Committee, and it was resolved that their meetings be convened by post card by the clerk. The. appointment of a Finance Committee was left over till next meeting. I’INANOB. The Chairman stated on behalf of the Finance Committee that the sum of £352 5s Id was lying in the Bank to the credit of the Board, and that Is 5d had been paid in during the month, being amount received from Inspector of Weights and Measures, as fee received for adjusting scales. £2 14s had also been received for dog collars. A meeting of the Finance Committee had been hold to ditcusa matters in connection with the fence round Reserve No. 15, and they had come to the decision that it would be better to obtain a solicitor’s opinion as to the legality of awarding a sum out of the Board’s funds to Mr Mundell as compensation for the fence. They had then obtained the opinion of the Board’s solicitor, 1 which was that tho Board could not expend their funds in that way. The Chairman further stated that he had seen the Chairman of the Hoad Board, and he believed that matters between the two Boards would be satisfactorily settled at next meeting of the Road Board. LAMPS, Mr Mundell said something should be I done in regard to putting up a few lamps before the winter came on ; and he theiofore proposed that the Works Committee report to next meeting on the number of lamps required and their position, and also make inquiries as to the cost of posts, lamps, etc. Mr Huffey seconded the motion and it was carried. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Maslin applied to have Mr Dunlop’s name put down as lessee of reserve No. 765, which was granted. Mr Mundell drew attention to the dangerous opening left in the culvert near his rooms The Overseer was instructed to get a grating put over it.. Mr Taylor drew the attention of the Board to the gorse spreading into the ,
bush from the fences round the upper park.—The Chairman as a member of the Domain Board said it would be attended
ALTERATION OF MEETINGS. It was decided to leave the proposal over till next meeting of altering the M meetings of the Board from fortnightly to monthly
overseer’s report.
The Overseer’s report for the past fortnight was read. He stated that Beckley has finished his contract on the Cemetery road, with the exception of removing some of the large stones ; he has also finished shingling the footpaths between Huffey's and Mcllraith’s. The Overseer also submitted the names of several persons who had unregistered dogs in their possession.—lt was resolved that .the Clerk give them notice to register at once, and if hot done within a reasonable time, legal proceedings to be taken.—The Overseer was instructed, on the motion of Mr Taylor seconded by Mr Mundell, to report to next meeting the work-likely to be required during the next few months, and what labor could be dispensed with, as most of the work in the town is done. ACCOUNTS. Three small accounts were passed for payment, 1 the pay-sheet for the month amounting to £6B 13s lOd, not including an account from the Hoad Board for cement and tar. This being all the business the Board then resolved itself into a Board of 1 Health.
INSPECTOR or nuisances’ report.
This report was read,and it was resolved that notice be given to Messrs Tasker and Co. to abate the nuisance complained of or the work will be done at their expense. The Overseer was also instructed to gwe notice to the persona mentioned in his report to take steps to abate the nuisances on their properties. Mr Sherrati’s timei as Inspector of Nuisances)! expired on the 31st of January, he having been temporarily appointed at a salary of £1 per month. Mr Taylor proposed, Mr Maslin seconded, and it was carried Sherratt be permanently appointed Inspector of Nuisances at a salary of £l2 per annum.” —Carried. This being all the business, the Board adjourned.
