CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE.
The Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday evening, the 6th inst:—
Expectations of improved weather have not been at all realised, and the torrent of rain which fell from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning have damped both the grain and the hopes of the farmers to
a very connidrrable extent. Large arej'S ; in stoolc must be seriously injured by the i deluge, more especially ns the tempera- I tore is so high, that sprouting must inevitably follow. It is feared that the uncut wheat will be so beaten down as to entail great difficulty in reaping. Altogether the outlook is very unpromising, and has cast quite a gloom over the agricultural districts, tho only glean; of comfort being the prospects of bettor prices for those who were fortunate enough to have early crops. Ihe anxiety of farmers to secure (heir crops has prevented their appearance in the market, consequently less business has transpired* than is usual at this time of the year. Sales have been confined principally to a few lines of early wheat and oats, while barley meets with a Utile more attention at below' quotations. The demand for rye grass seed is slackening slightly, buyers’ requirements being nearly satisfied. The block between vendors and purchasers of cocksfoot has not been removed yet, both classes holding firm to their values. Some fine peas are now coming forward, but prices asked are not responded to. There is no alteration to note in regard to dairy , produce. Quotations for the week are as follow Wheat—Ola Tuscan, 2s lOd ; Hunter’s and Pearl (new), 2s 6d to 2s 9d, f.0.b.; chick wheat, ls9d to 2s, f.o.b. CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS.
At the Addington Live Stock Market on Wednesday, fairly numerous entries of all kinds of stock yarded for the day’s supply. Among the fat sheep were to be found some prime drafts of crossbreds, and tor these again slightly better prices were realised. Medium quality and merinos without alteration ; crossbred wethers sold at from lls fid to 15s ; merino wethers, 7s to 10s, being from l|d to 2d per lb, as per quality. A pretty numerous entry of store sheep were offered, and a fair clearance made at, however, very low values ; 2-tooth crossbred wethers at 10s Bd, and a line of ditto first cross 7s fid ; lines of lambs at fia, fis 2d, and 7s 3d ; lines of crossbred wethers, mixed ages, at 9s sd, ditto ewes 9s 7d, and a line of merino ewes, with lambs, at 5s lOd. Fat lambs met with only a slow sale, at from fia fid to 10s per head. The pig market was well supplied, and the demand proved quite equal, stores selling freely at good values. In the store cattle market a small entry found next to no demand. The fat cattle market moderately supplied. The enquiry proved not sufficient to make a clearance, sales being made at late rates. Steers, £5 5s to £7 15s ; heifers, £4 Jsa to £7 2s fid, being from 17s to 19a per 1001 b, as per quality.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS,
J. H. Kilgour, grain and produce broker, reports under dale March 4 as follows: Wheat.—The market continues quiet, and is.likely to remain so until arrival of the new crop. Prices are nominally 3s 4d to 3s fid for piime milling, 2s 8d to 3s for medium milling, Jand 2s to 2a 4d for inferior and fowl feed.
Gats.—With the exception of a few lota changing hands for local requirements, there is nothing doing, as shipping buyers are holding back in the expectation of the new crop being sold at lower rates. I quote old oats at 2s to 2s Id for best quality with a very limited demand. I have no samples of the new crop to hand, but I have heard of sales being made at IslOd.
Barley.—There is nothing new in this cereal to report. Potatoes, —My sales of kidney potatoes have been at £2 to £2 ss; and as Derwents are now beginning to come forward it is unlikely that kidneys will improve in price. Sales of the latter have been made at £2 15s,
Butter.—7d to 7£d for salted in kegs, Demand limited.
Potatoes. —Supplies are pouring in. Farmers, to meet present necessities, are selling, but in a few months we shall be short, as never before have we had such a short planting.
