SOMETHING LIKE PEW RENTALS.

The thirty-eighth annual sale of the sittings of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, took place on the evening of the 6th of January at 7 o'clock. At the time of the opening of the sale the church was well filled. Beecher sat upon the platform, and near him wore H. B. Clafliu and S. V. White. Promptly at the hour designated the pastor rose and advancing to the desk, said : " I congratulate myself, and congratulate this evening that the auspicious occasion has come around which all good men long for through the year, and to-night is order that we may express our welcome, we have selected two of the handsomest men in the congregation to sit upon the platform behind me" (referring to Claflin and White). " Yes, and both white men, too," put in Mr Claflin. " They are quarrelling for ihe honors," added Beecher. " That is the most favorable aspect. The other is that we secure good conduct on the part of the men. You are almost all of you veterans, and you know the way of the evening. The conditions will be read you by our veteran auctioneer, who for love and not for money, has served us many years and has been growing better and better every year. Now there's nothing more to state except to express the wonder that our rental should always come on a stormy night. But it must be because we are set to make an example of before tha tvorld, that the more gloom and storm the more our virtues and faith shine forth, and we come out, in spite of wind and storm, victorious." Hoyt began the sale, bidding being premiums for choice of seats. The first choice sold for 800 dols., and the second for 500 dols. The third choice was started at 450 dols. The premiums realised from the sale of all the seats aggregated 15,399 dols., and the rentals added make the amount realised 27,256 dols. La6t year the sum realised was 34,489 dols. The highest ever realised was in 1879, when the amount was 68,977 dols. Beecher was exceedingly cheerful at the conclusion of the sale.
