PRESBYTERIAN GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

The Presbyterian Assembly decided on Monday night that when only one student presents himself for examination for a scholarship, he is entitled to the bursary, the Standard to be the passing the University matriculation examination. | The scholarship was awarded to A. Treadwell, of Dunedin. The statistical returns so far as received show that the total contribution from 63 congregations was stated to be £30,796 for past year, as against £30,162 from 68 congregations the previous year. The membership returned from 63 congregations was 6191 ; that of the previous year 5794 from 68 congregations. The average stipend of the ministers was £257, and the number of adherents was reckoned at 60,000. The General Assembly of the Presbyterion Church terminated at Christcburch on Tuesday. The dispute between the St. Andrew's Church and the Christchurch Presbytery was amicably settled by a conference between the latter and a Committee of the Assembly. The following resolution was carried—- " That the attention of the Assembly having been directed to some exceptional instances in which public dances were held in connection with entertainments for raising funds for church purposes, this Assembly expresses its disapproval of connecting entertainments for the raising of funds for church purposes with public dances and other questionable entertainments, and recommends all members of the church to discountenance the same." A long discussion look place on this resolution, one of the members expressing an opinion that it was an insult to suggest that fuods for church purposes had been raised by dances, whilst another said that a "demoralising example was set by a sister Ohurch who sanctioned these dancings." On the motion of the Rev. R. Somarville the next Assembly was appointed to meet at Auckland on the second Tuesday in February, 1886, at 7.30 p.m. in St. Andrew's Church, the convenor of the i Committee being the Rev. R. Somerville.
