MURDER AT AUCKLAND.
On Thursday a settler at Pokeno, Auckland, named Edward Prendergast, shot his wife through the heart in their house. After committing the dreadful crime ho went to Mercer and got drunk. Ha then i told several people that he had just shot his wife, but he was not believed, as he at the same time made a number of incoherent statements and was in the lunatic asylum about two years ago. The murder was committed about mid-day and was not discovered till the evening, when two sons went home and found the dead body of their mother lying on the kitchen floor. Prendergast was arrested soon after the discovery, and, on being charged with the deed, said ; “ 0 yes, I did it ; you will get the pistol on the shelf.” Search was made and a large horse pistol, which had evidently recently been discharged, was found as stated. r Jhe murderer is about 60 yearn o'd and his victim was about the same age. ,
