ST. MARY’S CHURCH, GERALDINE.
On Monday evening a meeting of the parishioners of St Mary’s' Episcopalian Church, was held in the Literary Institute, Geraldine. There were present—-the-Rev. Jab. Preston, Incumbent (in the chair), Dr Fish, and . Messrs Hughes, Pearpoint, Willoughby, Eckford, Lloyd, White, Cook, and Hardcastle. The Chairman explained that the meeting was called for the purpose of electing a churchwarden in the room of Mr b’hiers, whose .resignation was then read. It was resolved on the ;motion ot Mr Pearpoint, seconded by Mr Eckford, to accept Mr Shiers’ resignation. Dr Fish proposed, Mr Pearpoint seconded, and it was carried—That Mr Hughes be elected churchwarden,” Mr Pearpoint proposed, Mr Cook seconded, and it was carried—That Mr E. Hardcastle be elected to serve on the vestry in the place of Mr Hughes.” Mr Pearpoint said some immediate steps should be taken to get the leak in the church repaired. Mr Cook said he was present when Mr Craigio’s, man, from Timaru, had ex?
arained the church, and it was found that the leak arose from the end sheets of iron being to narrow. The portion of them covered by the flushing had been beaten out to make them wider, and the leak was caused by the-rain beating in under the flushing. The work was estimated to cost about £l6. Mr Eckford moved, Mr Pearpoint seconded, and it was carried—“ That subscription lists be started at once to raise funds to repair the leak.” The work required doing immediately as the walls were suffering from the wet. It was pointed out that a motion was passed at a former meeting to the effect that the verger’s salary be increased, but it had not been done owing the shortness of funds. This being all the business the general meeting adjourned. TESTKT MEETING. A vestry meeting was then held, there being present —The Rev. Jas. Preston (in the chair), Dr Fish, and Messrs Hughes Pearpoint, Cook, and E, Hardcastle. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. A letter had been received from the Committee of the Diocesan Synod, asking the Vestry to appoint a competent person to inspect the parsonage and report what repairs were required, the report to be sent in to the standing Committee of the Synod.—Mr Shiers had been appointed, and the Chairman now read his report, which stated that some urgent repairs were needed. On the motion of Mr Hughes, seconded by Mr Hardcastle, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Shiers for the trouble he had taken in connection with the report. Dr Fish proposed, Mr Willoughby seconded, and it was carried—“ That the Churchwardens be empowered to arrange to repair the leak in the church, and that provision be made to obtain a temporary overdraft till the money be subscribed.” This being all the business, a vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
