THE LATE GENERAL GORDON.
At St. Saviour’s Church, Terauka, last Sunday, the Rev. Mr Hamilton referred to tbe death of General Gordon. He took his text from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians, and referred at some length to tbe extraordinary unselfishness shown in the life of the deceased. Reference to Gordon’s death was made in the churches on Sunday in Christchurch and Timaru, and the Dead March played in some. Prayers were offered for the extrication of Wolseley’s array from its critical position. In response to an invitation from the Mayor, all the places of business w«re closed in Christchurch yesterday for several hours, as a mark of respect to the memory of the late General Gordon. A special service was held in the Cathedral, which was densely crowded, and a salute was fired by the artillery in Hagley Park. The Cathedral service was conducted by the Very Rev. the Primate, and all the flags in the city were half-mast. In several city churohe? at Dunedin, yesterday, reference was made to General Gordon’s death. Rev, Waddle preached the principal sermon on the subject at St. Andrew’s. St. Matthew’s was draped in black.
