ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Feb. 10. The cargo of frozen mutton per steamship Coptic, from Now Zealand, arrived in good condition. Fpb. 11., The shipment of frozen mutton ex Orient steamer John Elder arrived in excellent condition. The Hon. J, B. Thurston, speaking at a meeting of the Royal Colonial Institute, advocated New Zealand annexing Fiji. The Chinese have closed the river Min against the French. Sir F. Napier Broome, Governof "Of Western Australia, will read a paper on “ Perth ” at the next meeting cf the Colonial Institute. ; The Anarchists are causing some trouble in Paris by the excesses committed by them.
AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, Feb. 11. Mr Service, Premier, has presented a memorandum to the Governor, in which ha expresses the disappointment of the colonies in connection with the affairs of New Guinea, He contends that the colonies should have limits to their responsibility strictly defined, or else be allowed to exercise control over the expenditure in New Guinea. He adds that his Government is not prepared to increase the £15,000 guaranteed without further information, Sailed, this morning—Tarawera, for the Bluff, Sydney, Feb. 12. The Sydney Cup closed with seventyfive entries. Hobart, Feb. 12. At the Tasmanian Racing Club’s meeting, the Hobart Cup was won by Ringwood, with Mozart second, and CoriolanuS third.
