WAR IN THE SOUDAN.
Cairo, Jan. 31. Lord Wolseley telegraphs that the vanguard of Major-General Earle’s column yesterday reached a position seven miles from Berti, where the enemy is concentrated. Major-General Earle hopes tojbe able to make an attack on the 2nd February on the Mahdi’s position, which is reported to be a very strong one.
London, Peb. 2. Major-General Bullet' has only been temporarily appointed to succeed MajorGeneral Stewart in his command in his Soudan, The British troops reconucitered the position held by Osman Digua at Kirsheen, but the rebels declined the attach. Feb. 3. General Wolseley telegraphs that the enemy has abandoned Berti, and that the place is now occupied by Major! General Earle, who reports the Nile most difficult to navigate, but that his column is gradually overcoming all obstacles.
