The s.s. lonic arrived at Auckland from New Caledonia yesterday and brings news of the total wreck of the French warship La Chere, near Noumea. The crew was saved. In the District Court, Dunedin, yesterdry Judge Ward suspended the order of discharge of a bankrupt for an indefinite time because he was not a trader and had incurred a number of small debts. The Tarawera arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday morning from her trip to the West Coast Sounds, The weather was favourable and the trip proved most enjoyable. Concerts, theatrical performances, balls, and a regatta took place. Joseph Davie, licensee of th* TuaMarina Hotel, Blenheim, was committed for trial for unlawfully altering a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, the charge being laid under the Forgery Act. It is alleged the accused, who is an old resident and a man of property, filled up a cheque for £l2 at the request of one O'Leary, and after deducting an o’d debt gave a few shillings change to O’Leary. O’Leary swears he signed it for £1 on ly, and alleges the accused afterwards altered the words and figures from one to twelve, for which latter sum the accused cashed it. Bail was allowed, accused in £3OO, and two sureties of £l6O each. A Gazette notifies that the Governor will grant a free pardon to any person implicated, not being the principal offender, who wiM give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of any one or more of the persons concerned in the setting fire to the premises of the New Zealand Timber Company at Auckland on the lOih inst. Schneider gave the captain no provocation. Later on in the voyage the captain had Schneider stripped down to the waist, and allowed an albatross which he held to peck at him.
