SOUTH ORARI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The South Oran School Committee held their hist meeting for the year on Monday, the 19th January. Present —Messrs R. A. Barker (Chairman), McLeod, Binskin, Bisset, Bates and Gregg, MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirm jd. CORRESPONDENCE. The Chairman read a letter from Mr Fraser explaining that a pupil in Standard VI. had failed to obtain a pass simply through a misunderstanding, for which the boy was not responsible. —Resolved : “ That a prize be awarded the boy in question, as he would undoubtedly liaye passed with ease but for the mistake referred to.” A letter was read from the Board of Education calling attention to certain deficiencies set forth in the Inspector’s remarks, —Resolved : “ That the Chairman write to the Board stating that the teacher had expressed his regret that deficiencies had occurred, and hoped during the year, by increased application (especially in the subjects mentioned) to remedy the defects complained of, and that the Committee hoped the opportunity would be afforded him, feeling sure that Mr Fraser was quite able to make the required improvement.” HEAD master’s REPORT. The teacher reported the attendance from January 6th to 16th as follows : Boys, 13.5; girls, 17.1; total, 30.6. He pointed out that the bad attendance was due to the commencement of harvest, and that no improvement could bo looked for until after harvest. THE SEWING PRIZES. Mrs C. Griffiths wrote reporting on tire sewing classes, and giving names of those recommended for prizes.—Resolved ; “ That a vote of thanks be accorded to Mrs Griffiths for the fouhle she had 1 taken.” THE TREAT, Afler heaiiug the Sub-Committee’s report, it was resolved to accept Mr Giinpson’s offer for the supp'y of necessaries for the school treat; and that the children assemble in the school at 12 o’clock on Friday, and march from there to Mr Griffiths’ paddock, returning to the school at 7 p.m,, when the Chairman will distribute the prizes. The hope was unanimously expressed that the whole family of every child belonging to the school would he present, and that every endeavor would be made to make the gathering as enjoyable as possible to all. Afler completing arrangements for the householders’ meeting, vyhinh lakes place next week, ths meeting terminated.
