♦ AUCTIONEER ftEFOKT. TIMAKU. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : Morses The wet morning prevented their usuhl number of entries coining forward to to-day's sale, only some 25 he'id having put in an appearance. The market to-day whs dull, and though at this season of the year a few good soits are required for harvest work, there was but little demand for the various lots offered, but in all probability, if the weal her becomes settled a better demaud and higher prices will set in. They today placed one-half of the entries at from £l6 to £22 for good draughts, and from £lO to £l4 for light harness horses and hacks. Sheep At Washdyke, la3l Tuesday, entries were limited, and littb business was done. Altbough there are at present a number of enquiries for store sheep, buyers will not venture to give what is isked in most cases, anticipating easier price?, and in consequence few transactions nave been made at auction. At Makikihi last Monday there was but little doing owing to the same reason. Fat sheep are somewhat easier in price : good heavy weights were sold at from 13s 6d to 13s •W, a price little more than 2d per lb, which may be quoted as ruling rates at present. Cattle—They have no transactions of importance to report on store cattle. They have enquiries for lines of good young cattle and could place several hundred of these if in the market. A few odd lots "ere sold at Washdyke last Monday. Fat Cattle—They have placed privately a f«w lines of fat cattle, and quote prime beef at from 15s to 17s Gd per 1001 b. Wool, Skins and Hides- Their usual fortnightly sale was held at their rooms lust Wednesday, when they cleared out •ill the skin.":, and about 30 bales wool. Full-woolled merino and crossbred skins from 3d to 6d per lb. Pelts from 4d to lid each. Wool—Merino and half-bred tretn 8d to and crossbred from 7|d to 7|d. Hides from 3d to according to weight, etc. TIMARU MARKETS. The Canterbury Farmers' 00-operative Association (Limited) report as follows : An average amount of business in ordinary lines has been done duriDg the past fortnight, while with the approach of harvest orders for binder twine and harvest stores are coming forward for execution. Wool—Owing to the absence of buyers, transactions have been limited. They have placed 30 hales merino and halfbred at 8d and Lots intended for auction are coming forward, and the approaching sale promises to be a successful one, judging from the number of entries already received. Wheat meets with a poor demand at 3s for prime velvet and tuscan, and 2s 9d to 2s lid for red chaff, while for fowl corn Is 8d to 2s can be obtained. They have placed a few hundred sacks of red chaff at the above quotations. Oats have suffered a further decline in prices since their last report, and quotations are now 2s to 2s id for prime milling, Is lOd to 2s for long feed, about 500 sacks having been disposed of at these prices during the last day or two. Barley—Nothing doing except in small lots of feed, at 2s 3d to 2s 9d, f.o.b. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Jan. 16. New Zealand wheat, per bushel, 2s 9d ; N«w Zealand oats, 2s 8d ; maize, 4s 10J. Sugar Company's No. 1 pieces, per ton, £26. Melbourne, Jan. 16. 'lhe Melbourne Manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited, reports on the local market? as follows: Wheat, in fair demand, 3s 8d to 3* 9d ; malting barley, dull, 4s 4d to 4s lOd ; New Zealand oats, feeding sorts slow of sale, 3s to 3s 4d ; milling do, 3j 5d to 3s 7d, market dull ; New Zealand oats under bond, 2s 8d to 2s lOd. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, Jan. 17. Colonial breadstuff's—Adelaide wheat, ex store, 39s ; New Zealand do, 80.-) to 36s ; Adelaide flour, ex store, 265. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,050,000 quarters, an iucrease of 150,000 quarters during the week. Australian tallow, average quality—Beef, 34s ; mutton, 34s 6d. Forward shipments of wheat are quoted at 37s 6d ; lhe mirket, however, is quiet.
