The Public Works Department have accepted the tender of Messrs Watson and Rhodes for the Taieri bridge, for £5733. A. A fire took place in Wellington on Tuesday whereby the furniture warehouse of Mr Nicholson in Cuba Street was totally destroyed. The insurances amounted to £3200 and Nicholson estimates his loss at £IOOO over this,—Four cottages insured for £750 were burned down at Kelvin Grove, Dunedin, on Tuesday.—Two attempts were made on Monday to burn down the house of Tiios. A public enquiry by the the Hospital Board into the occasion of Dr Nedwill’s resigning his position on the Hospital staff commenced at Christchurch on Tuesday night and is exciting great interest A number of medical men gave evidence and it appeared that Dr Stewart had performed a certain operation on a patient, since dead, to whom the risk had been explained, but who urged that it might be performed, as life was a burden to him, and he could not gain a livelihood. Dr Ned will’s chief complaint is that no consultation of the staff had been held as provided by the rules before the operation, but a number of side issues appear to have been raised during the course of the enquiry. Dr. Stewart admits that no consultation had been called, but pleads that it was an emergency case and would net admit of a delay.
