BOARD OF EDUCATION.
A meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday last, there being present—The Rev. Geo. Barclay (Chairman), Dr Foster, and Messrs R. A, Barker, W. J. Steward, E. Wakefield, and S. W. Goldsmith, A letter was read from Mr J. Talbot, apologising for non-attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. I he Chairman in his opening statement reported that Mr Briars, 8.A., had been appointed Hoad Master of the Temuka school. A delay had taken place in the proclamation of the new school district of Waitohi, owing to want of paper maps, but he hoped the difficulty would soon bo got over. The Inspector was granted leave of absence for three weeks. The architects reported that the tender of Clinch and Lloyd (£25 17s) had been accepted for repairs to the Geraldine Flat School. The Inspector forwarded his report on the Geraldine, Gapes’ - Valley, Rangitata Island, Pangilata South, Kakahu, South Orari, Pleasant Valley, Orari Bridge, Woodbury, Scolsburn,Opihi, Mount Gay, Belfield and Kakahu Bush Schools. The Inspector added that a scholarship Committee would have to be appointed, and he suggested that certain maps, etc., be got for the use of Schoo 1 Committees. Mr Wakefield moved—“ That the Chairman, the Ven. Archdeacon Harper, Mi M. Gray and the Inspector be appointed the Scholarship Committee.” Mr Steward moved—“ That the suggestion of the Inspector to provide the Committees with plans of school districts, etc., be referred to the Committee appointed to recommend a scheme of expenditure.”—Both resolutions were carried, Mr James Scott, M.A., Head Master of the Timnru school, sent in his resignation, “which was accepted. It was resolved—“ That in view of the opportunity now afforded for an effectual and thorough re-organisution of the Timaru School, the Committee be requested to reconsider their recommendation for the second mastership, and that Miss Gellatly be appointed infant mistress.” Mr K. F. Gray attended as a deputation from the Temuka Schoo! to interview ihe Board re the mistake made in the payment of salary to one of the teachers of that school, and after the matter had been explained the Board resolved—- “ That ilie amount overpaid in error to Mr E. W. Gnrr (the second master), amounting to £'27 10s, during the eleven
months ended November 31st, be deducted from next year’s salary by instalments of £2 7s 6d per month,” Letters were received from Temuka, Wailuna Creek, Redcliff, Sonih ilangitata, Waitohi Flat, and Waihao Committee re the Inspectoi’s reports, and as the Redcliff Committee recommended that their teacher be dismissed, the Board decided that he be given the necessary notice. The Master of the Orari Bridge School applied through the Committee for an increased lodging allowance. This matter was deferred to next meeting. A letter was read in which it was asked whether school prizes could be provided out of incidental funds. The Board said decidedly not. The meeting then terminated.
