Temuka Mechanics Instiute. The annual meeting of the members of this Institute lakes place to-morrow evening at 8 o’clock sharp. Tea Mi eting and Concert. A tea meeting and concert in connection with the Wesleyan Church, Temuka, will take place on Wednesday the 28 ih inst. The Wool Season. —The number of bales of wool received by rail at Timaru this season up to the 10th inst., was 11,837, and by road 2902, making a grand total of 14,739. Ball at Milford. —The Chairman of the Milford School Committee notifies that a ball in aid of the School prize fund will be held iu the Milford Schoolroom to-morrow night. Monthly Sale.—Mr K. F. Gray holds his monthly stock sale, &c., at his rooms, Temuka, to-morrow. At the same lime he will submit to auction two quarter-acre sections in the Arowhenua township. The Weather.— During the past few days the weather has been exceedingly cold and wet, and on Tuesday afternoon a severe hailstorm occurred. Haymaking is consequently at a standstill and the grain crops are suffering considerably. Warm, dry days are now badly wanted. Proposed New County.— At a meeting of the Levels Road Board on Tuesday last it was proposed by Mr Pringle, seconded by Mr Orbell and carried—“ That the Chairman be authorised to take the necessary stops to sever the Levels riding from the Geraldine County, to unite with the Pareora Riding to form a new County.” Sabbath School Treat. —The treat in connection with the Sabbath School attached to the Presbyterian Church, Temuka, takes place to-day. Should the day be a fine one it will take place in the Manse Paddock. If the day should prove wet the children are requested to muster at the Yoluntaer Hull at one o’clock. The Law’s Delay.— Owing to some arrangements made by the police having miscarried some difficulty was experienced in getting the embezzlement cases heard yesterday in Geraldine. There were no Justices of the Peace present at the appointed time and so Constable Willoughby had to go up to Four Peaks for Mr Walker. That gentleman, acoompanied by Captain Temple, arrived about 2.30 and the Court was held. The cases had been set down for II a.m. The Coating Harvest.— Messrs Siegort and Fauvel announce in our advertising columns that they can supply elevator and and conveyor canvas, for reapers and twine binders, of the best American materials, at Christchurch prices, being direct importers of the materials. The canvases can be made of any width at the shortest notice, and it being done under the superintendence of Mr T. B. Sheen ensures good workmanship. Those in want of these materials should certainly support the local firm, Gebaldinb Floral and Horticultural Society,— The first show of this description in Geraldine takes place to-day and we hope it will prove the success it ought to be. The promoters have worked very hard to get everything ready. The entries must be made at the Oddfellows’ Hall before 10 a.m. The show will be open to the public from 1 to 10 p.m. and during the evening the Bras* Band will give musical selections. From noon will be observed as a holiday. Woodbury Jockey Club.—A meeting of the members of the Woodbury Jockey Club was held in Wadlow’s hotel on Monday evening. There were present, Messrs M. E. Heatley, in the chair, J. Quuid, R. Gould, J. Ficfield, W. Kean, W. Davie and J. Harmer, Secretary. The minutes of the last meeting were read and, with the exception of a minute fixing the fee of membership at £1 Is, confirmed. It was then proposed by Mr Harmer, seconded by Mr Gould and carried —“That the fee be the same as last year, viz., 10s 6d,” The Chairman laid last year’s programme before the meeting for revision, and several alterations were made. The Hurdle Race was placed first on the programme and the stake increased from 12 sovs to fifteen sots., nomination 10s 6d and acceptance £1 is. A two-year-old race of 7 sovs. was also added to the programme. The Maiden Plate Stake was increased from 10 sovs. to 12 sots. The Nomination fee for the Cup was fixed at £1 Is and acceptance fee the same. Nominations for the Cup and Hurdle Handicaps to be sent in to the Secretary not later than the 21st March, and the weights will be declared on the 2nd April. Some alterations were also made in the rules. Full particulars of the alterations will shortly appear in the printed programme. It was resolved that all parties entering horses should be subscribers of 10s Gd to the funds of the Club. It was resolved that the Secretary prepare subscription lists. A working Committee, consisting of Messrs Quuid, Deans and Gould wore elected to carry out the race meeting. This being all the business the meeting terminated.
Railway Cases.—At, the R. M. CourtTimaru on Monday, a man named Solar was fined £1 and costs, in addition to 2s train fare for travelling on the railway between Timaru and tho Washdyko without a ticket on the 29th December last. Accused in extenuation said ho had not travelled on the railway for tvso years and know nothing about getting a ticket. When the guard asked him for his ticket he offered him Is Gd but as 2s wa* wanted and he had not got it he could not pay.—John Samuels was charged with smoking in a railway carriage between Oran and Winchester, but the bench dismissed the case, as they came to the conclusion after bearing the evidence that some mistake had been made. Baxter, general storekeeper, Geraldine, has removed into the premises lately occupied by the Bank of N.Z. Mrs Baxter will carry on millinery in the new shop.
