SHOOTING AFFRAY AT AUCKLAND.
Last Monday evening, between 9 and ; 10 o’clock, passers-by ! in Queen Street, Auckland, were alarmed Iby hearing two pistol- shots in rapid succession ot the mouth ofi Darby Street. ; A crowd soon assembled,-when a man, whp was afterwards at a late hour identified as John Brown, a negro coffee:Btiill,kepp«r, was discovered chasing another aegro named Tl.os. B?own (who has got hot and cold baths at Queen Street whsrl), up Victoria Street, when he fired ' U’o more shots at him. Some of the crowd 'chased the assassin, but seeing a pistol ; in his hand they were,-afrajd to close with him, and he escaped for a, time. Twp, of [the shots took etfec on Thomas Brown,, the one entering his chest, ami the other penetrating his side. The wounded man made.his way to his residence, where his partnerAye.tr, anegro, seeing .hi^ injuries, brought him up to town to inform the police of Ids assailant, and get medical treatment. Mean a idle the police had been scouring the■ locality, for the man who. had fired ; the shots, la Wellesley Street* Detectives Walker and Hughes and Constables Lamb and Ward came across the wounded man, Thomas Brown, and took him to Dr Dawson’s. On examination Dr Dawson discovered one bullet in his breast, its passage having been stopped by the breast bone, and, after a little trouble, be extracted if. The second .bullet wound was over the false rib on the left side, and the bullet had passed .'.through, and out at the back. After carefully dressing the wounds, Dr Dawson .advised the man’s removal to the hospital, where I e was taken hy Detective Him he*. Constable Rowley, accompanied hy Hartford, discovered about halfpast two o’clock that John Brown was up in a house jn Abercrombie Strpet. The constable went to the, back and Hartford to the front of the premises so as to prevent h's escape, hut he (Hide no resistance, and surrendered. The injured man says that he and J jhn Biown had tea at Frank’s restaurant together. They were both sober, and had no quarrel. John Brown left an hour, before him, and on coming out of the restaurant be noticed Brown; walking, up and down in front of the premises'at, tbe corner, of Darby Street, They met, and John, exclaiming, ‘ You-;—•— ■~ I have waited for you,” drew a revolver and fired. The first bullet entered his breast, |he second -shot missed, and tbe third took effect in hia side., The: fourth shot ,was -fired after him, as he ran up Victoria ; Street. Dr Dawson does not think, tbewouhds of the injured man will, prove fatal unless in* flammatioa or erysipelas sets in.
