Telegrams to band from the front report that a detachment of artillery reached Korti, and preparations were proceeding tor an advance of all the troops that have arrived there on Meraoueh, an important position on the Nile about, 30 miles to the northward of Korti. The Victorian Press generally express great indignation at the hoisting of the German flag on the north coast of New Guinea, The Hon. Mr Service, Premier, has presented a memorandum to the Home Government expressing much surprise at the action of the German naval officers after the assurance of the Imperial Secretary of Stale to the colonies. The memorandum further states that the Ministers are greatly disappointed at the want of response displayed by the Imperial Government towards the aspiration of the Australasian colonies. The Ministers also complain of the continued inaction which has been manifested by the Imperial Government, and demand that immediate steps should be taken to save Australia such neighboring islands as are still available, Dec. 26. Arrived, this morning —Te Atom from the Bluff, and Orient steamer Austral with the Brindisi mails, dated London, November 21st. Dec 27. The steamer Black Eagle, plying between Brighton and St. Kilda, sprung a leak yesterday while making one of her trips. She was able to reach Brighton pier safely and landed all hr passengers, numbering over 130, but sunk shortly afterwards. While the sports-were taking place at. Eagle Hawke, near Sandridge, yesterday, the tjfrand Stand, containing 560 women and children collapsed. A few only of the occupants were injured, but none seriously. The Mews at St. KiMaw-is'destroyed by fire to-day, and twenty-ihiee horses perished in the flames.
