At Kaiapoi last Siturdaya bnshman mimed Taylor cut his throat, but is likely to recover. A body was seen yesterday, but not recovered, ia thy Auckland Harbor. It is supposed to be that of a sailor named Peterson who has been missing since the 25th. A man named John Crawford was arrested yesterday in Wanganui on a charge of embezzling £1 10a 4d from Mr Barlow, of Wellington. The man Dunlop, who was injured through falling from a scutfold in Wellington, has died. At the Beefton races last Saturday Mr MeGatfin’s Sincerity burst a blond vessel and dropped down dead twenty lengths from home. The horse Philosopher fell and broke his neck. The rider was seriously hurt. It is supposed that a man named Ivena has been drowned in the Lee Stream, Otago. He was a single man, 26 years of age, and had a deferred payment section. Messrs Miller and Smith’s contract for the Deep Stream contract of the Otago central line has been accepted, the amount being £32,874. Messrs Sparrow and Co.’s contract for the ironwork of the Wingatua viaduct is £12,922. A man named William Thomson has been missing from his home near the Low Quarry Bush, Upper Makikihi, since the 19th inst. It is feared that he has lost his reason and diligent search is being made for him. A German named William Yon Qaertner was found drowned in a popd on his farm near Waimate, on Wednesday last. He was a colonist of 30 years, and hud been in failing health for some time. The Government intends to have sec* tions of work laid out along the North Island Trunk line, for the purpose of letting the same to natives. Fitzgerald was captured at Brighton on Thursday. He had been fishing in that neighborhood. He was brought into Dunedin on Friday morning, and remanded till Thursday next. The circular cablegram received from Mr Service, Premier of Victoria, asking the colonial Government to join the other colonies in protesting against the action of the German Government in annexing territory in New Guinea is still under consideration by the Government, Correspondence is also passing between Government and Mr Service. Mr Harry Vallance, aged 27, of Castle Point, Wellington, was killed on Sunday last. He was with others schooling a horse over hurdles on the beach, when the horse fell and rolled over him. The Roman Catholics have contributed £2500 during the year to the Dunedin Cathedral, and Bishop Moran in thanking them on Christmas Day for their liberality, annonneed his hope that Mass would he celebrated in the cathedral next Christmas Day. TERRIBLE EARTHQUAKE. Madrid, D c. 27. An earthquake of a serious character has been experienced in Andalusia. The shock was felt over the greater part of the province, and caused immense damage to several towns, and the death of a number of peop'e beH«es serious injuries to many others. A shock i f earthquake has also been felt here, hut it was alight and caused but little damage. Dec. 29. Later intelligence 'from the - province of Audalusia shows that the loss of life by the earthquake has been very heavy. One hundred and fifty persons were killed at Albigueros and forty at Arena* Del Rey.
