Salk op Timber, —On Monday next Mr W. Maslin wi.l hold a clearing sale of sawn timber, firewood, etc., at the yards of Messrs A. Sherratt and Co., Geraldine. The Stab Hotel, Tbmuka.— Mr John Anglund has taken this hotel from Mr M. Quinn and trusts to be favored with a share of public patronage. To merit the same, he intends keeping in stock only refreshments of the best, and will give those favoring him the best attention.

Defunct Society.— Through our advertising columns Mr Edmund Mason, for the Registrar of Friendly .Societies, notifies that lbs registry of the L0y..l Arowhenua Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., No. 31, has been cancelled, on the ground that the Society has ceased to exist.

Pbopeety Tax.—The amount of property tax received up to Monday was £30,000. The Timaetj Hospital.—Mr R. A. Barker has been gazetted a commissioner of the Tiamru Hospital. Held Ovke.—A full report will appear in next issue of the races held at Rangit.ata and the picnic of the Primitive Methodist Church held in the Geraldine Domain. The Late Ministry.—-The Gazette notifies that the Queen has expressed her approval that the Members of the late Ministry,should retain the title of “Honorable." Masonio. —The installation of W.M. and investiture of officers of St, George’s Lodge 1856, E. 0., takes place in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Temuka, next Monday evening at half past 6 o’clock. TTjiahu Woollen Factory.—The tender of Mr Alex. Sinclair has been accepted for the erection of the building for the Timaru Woollen Company, and work will be commenced at once.

Inquest in Timaett. —Ah inquest was held in 'iimaru on Tuesday on an infant named Alice Waldron, 6 months old. The evidence wept to show that the mother went to sleep with the child on her arm, and on awakening found that it was off her arm and dead. Dr. Hogg stated that the cause of death, was “ suffocation. 5 * The jury, however, returned a verdict that “ the child died from natural causes.’’

The Salvation Aemy.— Captain Fanny Worsdell and Lieutenant Jenny Westlake, with several of the rank and file of the T«muka contingent of the Army, left by the express for the great Salvation Congress at Christchurch on Wednesday afternoon. In the train were Salvationists from Invercargill and other places and they were accompanied by three bands, which, as the express left the Temuka station, played some inspiriting airs. On Thursday at Christchurch the Congress was opened, when a procession of 700 soldiers, with their bands, from all parts of the colony marched through the town. Major Howard, from England, conducted the services.

Ihb Grain Tariff, —Government baring fully considered the rates at which they can afford to carry grain with reasonable profit within the flat districts on the Canterbury plains and the districts north of Oamaru,and having regard to the loss sustained by the cartage competition, have determined to revise the railway tariff to the following extent ; —The classified rates will remain as at present up to eight miles ; from eight to sixteen miles the rates will be the present rate for eight miles, and beyond that distance the present rates will be reduced to Is 6d per ton. The only other material alteration in the Canter bury district is the special rate of Is per ton for all goods sent from wharves to the shed in Lyttelton for Customs examination.

Crick ht. The following players will represent Geraldine in the match against Timaru on Saturday ; E. H. Pearpoint (captain), E. H. Templar, Fred. Fish, A. H. Briscoe, A. G. Cox, F. Bethune, B. Macdonald, W. Macdonald, G. Ward, F. E. Moore ; emergencies : A. Erskine, K. Temple, G. Slack, and E. Taylor, We understand the Timaru team will be chosen from the following players ; C. T. H. Perry, M. J. Godby, J. Eothwell, F. Jones, F. G. Eaymond, H. W. Smith, A. Eeid, C. 8. Fraser, W, J. Hughes, J. Laurenson, E. M. Lough, and C. A. Jefferson. They will leave Timaru at eight o’clock by conveyance, and will arrive in Geraldine about eleven, when play will commence at once.—A match be--tween the Timaru Herald and the Temuka Young Men’s Cricket Club will take place on Saturday next.

Wholesale Robbery.— John William Crabtree was committed for trial at Christchurch on Tuesday .on two charges of horse stealing and four of larceny of quantities of building materials. The case for the prosecution is that he took horses of the value of nearly £IOO from paddocks near Cristchurch and drove them to Timaru where he put them in the saleyards to be sold by auction, but before they were sold ho was arrested. Building materials to the value of about £6O have been stolen from houses in course of erection, and several drums of linseed oil and white load from the stores of the Farmers’ Co-perative Association. Crabtree was in the habit of going out all night with a horse and light trap in October, when it is supposed he committed the larcenies.

Timaru Tradesmen’s Racing Club.—A meeting of the Club was held in Timaru last Tuesday there being a large attendance. The following stakes were paid over. TwO‘yearold stakes, Mr F. Lambert £29 9s; Messrs M. and C. Hobbs, for Hurdles and Counties Handicap, £BS 10s ; Mr T. Quill, for Town Plate, £47 10s; Mr W. de GK Reeves, for Anniversary Plate, £23 15s; Mr J. Dooley, for second in Counties and Hack, £22 16s; Mr M. Sherwin, for second in Town Plate, £9 Is; Mr F. W. Cook, for Trot, £l4 ss; Mr W. Agnew, for Hack Hurdles," £l4 5s ; Mr W. S. Armitage, for second in Hurdles, £9 10s ; Mr J. Matthews, for Consolation, £l4 ss. Sundry accounts were passed for payment, amounting to £65, making a total disbursed ?of £335 15s. Mr Armitage gave nolico of motion to add to the programme for 1885 a race for Polo ponies, also to alter the name of the Counties Handicap to the Citizen’j Cup, the winner to receive a silver cup of the value of £SO. The Club have a balance to the good of £65. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Stansell for his services as Clerk of the Course, and a similar compliment was accorded the President of the Club, Mr R. Rutherford.

Mr Jobn Paterson, Springfield, Temnka, invites tenders for stocking 30 acres crop. Mr J. It- Leash, The Willows, Temuka, offers 10s rewaid for the recovery of a small jet-black dog. “ H.E.”, Winchester, who possesses good doi's and has good references, advertises for a situation as shepherd. Air F. Merck lias blue stone piles for sale and will deliver them'to any part of the Geraldine district.
